I went in totally spoiler free, which was great in the sense that this sucker punched me more. But, wow, I did not see that ending coming. That in a Star Wars movie every single main and supporting character of the protagonists is killed, sacrificing themselves for giving the rebellion a chance against the death star.
I mean, the enjoyed the movie a lot, and it is certainly a powerful statement highlighting how many get killed to get these plans out, that not just background characters and maybe one or two major characters die, but everybody we got to know in the movie. But wow, that is not how action movies work normally. The only ones we see surviving are the characters from the main trilogy that appear as leaders in the background here, obviously because their (larger) story goes on.
I'm still kind of stunned.
