ratcreature: RatCreature as Iron Man (ironman)
Well, no progress on yuletart yet, but I did manage to draw the Iron Man icon. (In the end I simply ignored the nose/faceplate issue, just coloring it like the faceplate -- just assume that if Tony had a nose like that he'd be able to invent armor seamlessly covering it or something.)

ratcreature: RatCreature as Methos (methos)
A Methos!RatCreature, and for once my icon's hair does not look worse or more unnatural than the canon version. I decided to show the skull facemask as the obvious prop, even though such a mask would not fit my avatar. Just pretend it would sit above the nose somehow, or something...

ratcreature: RatCreature takes a quickening (quickening)
My poor rat Leo (the one who has been struggling for some months now with antibiotics resistant myco) has stopped eating this weekend. I could coax him to eat a little bit of scrambled eggs today, but he hasn't been eating anything else since yesterday. If this continues, I will have to put him down very soon. :(

So I've been distracting myself from my rat-related heartbreak by finishing that second Highlander icon, for which I'd done the pencils a while ago.

ratcreature: RatCreature as Duncan MacLeod (duncan)
I was looking to distract myself with something that takes concentration, because I'm worried so much about Linus but can't do anything to help him. So I decided to draw something, but felt too frazzled for anything complicated, so the only thing I could think of was making myself a new icon. And because [personal profile] sholio has been posting about Highlander a lot, and to comment I only had my ninja icon, the first thing I could think of was making myself a Highlander icon. Hence I give you Duncan!RatCreature.

ratcreature: RatCreature as Spock melds with RatCreature as Kirk. (mindmeld)
I've been trying to draw this one for a while, but always abandoned it, because it turns out that noses of this size are quite inconvenient when drawing a mindmeld position. Well, I guess in the RatCreature!Trekverse there's nose-nose contact on top of the hand-head contact with mindmelds and they transmit not just thoughts but also the flu...

ratcreature: FAIL! (fail!)
I was a bit unsure what kind of motif to choose for a "Fail!" icon. I decided to go for this one, because my avatar is a toon, and the classic toon failure is to run forward without realizing that it lost the firm ground, while the audience sees the calamity coming way earlier.

Then while drawing this, I realized that this is actually not unlike the typical "fail!" you run into (or commit yourself sometimes) in internet discussions. Also, the cliff motif is consistent with my "flail!" icon which shows a RatCreature teetering on the edge of a cliff, flailing its arms wildly, and which for some reason (probably the similar texts) got mistaken for a "fail!" icon several times. So I thought I'd make both a set.

ratcreature: RatCreature is nitpicking. (nitpicking)
I felt the need for a nitpicking icon. Belatedly it occurred to me that I'm not sure English has the expression about "finding a hair in every soup" for people who nitpick to find something to complain about. Still, the imagery is fairly clear, I think, so I went ahead with my motif for visualizing the activity.

I also made another icon with a RatCreature that hasn't heard right, both for the literal meaning (seriously, how can people on tv series, trained actors, mumble this much?), as well as the figurative one:

ratcreature: RatCreature as Two-Face flipping a coin. (twoface)
Batman: Jekyll & Hyde #1-6 (written by Paul Jenkins, art by Jae Lee)

I didn't like the art much, the inking in particular. The black areas--and there were many of them--seemed more randomly dumped than being placed deliberately for either consistent composition, drama or lightening reasons, so there was a lot of black scattered around making the page look flat and dark, and the shapes harder to see for the lack of a clear line, and the many smallish black areas didn't help guide the eyes through the panels and pages either. All of which made the reading slower and more tedious than it needed to be, with no equal gain on the "dark and gloomy" mood scale.

That said, I quite liked the mini-series otherwise. Okay, so there didn't really need to be yet another origin story for Two-Face making his history even more complicated, and the mad scientist running creepy gothic labs in Gotham (in cooperation with Two-Face no less) isn't the most original thing either, but the basic set-up of the drug plot worked for me.

And while I don't have all the details of the various Two-Face background stories very present, this expansion still goes with the general stuff I recalled from the others, so it's probably not a retcon or intended to be outside of continuity. It made about as much sense as these attempts at supervillain psychology ever do, and is IMO actually one of the better examples for this kind of plot. (I'm kind of ambivalent about the trend to somehow rationalize supervillain behavior through some cobbled together (pseudo-)psychology because it almost never works well.)

And it was nice to see Batman working with Gordon, and there was plenty of Alfred too, so overall I think this was a solid mini-series.

Also, I made a Two-Face!RatCreature icon, because I don't have any Batman villain icons yet.

ratcreature: RatCreature as Harry Dresden. (dresdenfiles)
I needed a Dresden Files icon, so I present you with a HarryDresden!RatCreature, my 110th icon. In keeping with the books there are multiple injuries (as usual), Bob the skull, his staff and rings, the duster, and his mother's pentacle amulett, though that isn't very recognizable at icon-size. If you want to really see the details (and another injury on his foot, with a blood stained bandage even!, that got cropped to make it fit the icon format), you can look at the pencils and at a larger inked version behind the cut.

ratcreature: RatCreature as Rodney recoiling from a Lemon: Gaah! (rodney)
While I haven't yet fully settled everything with my new desktop computer, the scanner works with it and by now its network does too, so I could scan the Rodney!RatCreature doodle I did a while ago and turn it into my 109th icon! You can look at the pencils behind the cut. )
ratcreature: Woe! RatCreature feels emo. (woe!)
Unfortunately my new icon is rather appropriate...

First, I woke up at an ungodly hour (around seven) sicker than yesterday, with a headache and chills in addition to the cough and sore throat, that also hurt more and my voice was hoarser too, and a number of irritating other stuff like that my nose started bleeding with the slightest provocation (like, say, *blowing it*) and for some reason my tonsils actually *itched* despite being not even all that swollen. Anyway, general ickiness abounded.

Now after I took some paracetamol and drank some tea, and then went back to sleep for a while, all that improved slightly, and I actually thought the day had taken a turn for the better. I stayed mostly in bed, watched the new Criminal Minds, read some fanfic, cuddled with my rats, doodled to make new icons, and it seemed things were looking up.

However it turned out that the mainboard of my desktop computer gave up the ghost completely. My desktop is quite old for a computer (I think with this mainboard it's been working since 2001? and some other parts were older) and it had problems for a while, like sometimes it wouldn't boot or it booted only to show the BIOS screen to explain the hardware problem (something about the processor voltage being below the acceptable range IIRC), or randomly rebooted, so this wasn't entirely unexpected, but it still sucks. Especially since for some reason that I never managed to figure out, my USB scanner won't work with my laptop.

Since the desktop finally died while I was about to scan some doodles I had drawn to turn into new icons, I only managed to scan and transfer the "woe!" one, but not the Rodney!RatCreature I've drawn to complement my SGA set. Anyway, because right now the laptop is my only working computer (*hearts working laptop*) I can't scan stuff anymore. Hence: Woe!

Also, I got an email that the rat litter from which I will get my new rats has been born. I don't have photos yet, because they're still too tiny for the mother to be comfortable with getting pictures taken, but I'll share photos as soon as I get sent some. I'm happy that now the end of Ben's sad state as a single rat is finally in sight. Well, obviously it will be still about five weeks before my future rats can move in with me and Ben, but soon he'll have other rats again for company with whom he hopefully will get along, and he won't need to make do with me for grooming and cuddling.

Not that dislike his affections, but well, besides rats being social animals, there are drawbacks to having your rat decide that your bed is the best place for dozing because you're the only cuddling option available (he never used to want to sleep on or next to me when his brother was still alive). For example Saturday evening he decided to sleep draped over my foot while I was reading, and then suddenly snapped at one of my toes. I think I must have accidentally poked him and it took him by surprise or something, because normally he's very docile and sweet natured. I mean, he won't bite you just because you shove him accidentally or grab him when he doesn't want to be picked up, and it's not even a problem to pry stuff away from his teeth, like once he picked up a piece of soft sticky eraser that had fallen to the floor and he tried to eat it, and he didn't do more than protest vocally when I took it away from between his teeth. While he didn't bite that hard, that is I suspect if I had fur like a rat or had been just wearing socks it wouldn't have broken the skin, and he let go immediately, it still hurt and for some reason it bled a lot for such a tiny wound. Anyway, for the rest of the evening my toe throbbed. Thankfully the usual drawbacks of him sharing my bed are just that I can't move freely and that I have to admonish him sometimes not to chew on my bed cover to arrange it to his liking like he does with the scraps of cloth for nesting in his cage. But still.

I'm afraid that unlike many of you in the recent "prove your existence" meme that made the round on my f-list after that SV LJ-drama, I can't procure much irrefutable proof of my reality/non-sockpuppet state for you.¹

¹ However, *melodramatic voice* I obviously might be dying of an infected rat bite as I type, so you could send ipods. ;-) Those are urgently needed here, since I still don't have any kind of portable MP3-player, admittedly not least because instead of buying gadgets I just spend about two ipods worth on a luxury rat cage for the ungrateful, biting menace and his future companions. (Um, I guess I'm still a bit disgruntled with Ben, even though the bite actually doesn't even hurt anymore.)
