random rat post...
On the one hand it's nice that Ben has gotten more cuddly and now likes to snuggle next to me on my bed, OTOH rats are quite small and he really doesn't seem to pay sufficient attention to the fact that I am not rat-sized but big enough to crush him, and that he's not always easy to notice besides beneath cushions and blankets or behind me. He has the same problem when I'm walking and he likes to run around, over and under my feet heedless of any potential danger, however I've long since taken to mostly shuffling sedately (and barefoot) when I walk while rats are outside and likely to come to me, so at most he gets nudged not stepped on.
Apparently from a rat perspective it seems obvious to him that he's of a perfectly noticeable size and not all that crushable, which I guess wasn't unreasonable if he'd be sleeping in a pile with other rats. However currently the poor guy is alone and obviously misses sleeping snuggled up to someone else, like he did with his brother, so he resorts to snuggling with me.
At least if all goes well he won't be alone very much longer, since I've arranged to get another two rats from a litter that will be born early November, so hopefully there will be two little rats who can move in with me and Ben by mid-December. And okay, that's still about six more weeks poor Ben will have to stay alone, but the only way I could have gotten rats earlier would have been from some random pet store, and I just like rats from hobby breeders much better because they are already used to humans, and I know how they grew up during their first weeks too.
