Ah, acrylics. I've worked with them enough to know that I'm not very good with them. However, your technique sounds like it would work for me, so I was probably just doing it wrong in the application. I like watercolors ok, but they're probably why I don't like to paint as well. It's really painstaking to blend then together, like you said, and you have to keep the paper moist and all that. . . Yeah, maybe I'm just too impatient. I stick to pencil and things turn out fine. :)
