God, even your rambles are more organized than mine! ;)
You raise some good points, here. I don't think it's really a coincidence that so many people who write batslash draw largely on the animated series. I know that when I first got into comics via Sandman, I found reading an incredibly frustrating process. I'm not really ... I don't want to say I'm not visual, because with words I am, but I'm not really an image-oriented person. I remember wishing fervently that these stories I loved were in prose. Right up until I read a Sandman story in prose that tried to duplicate what I loved from the comics, at which point I realized the medium was very much the message. But even now, I find reading comics something I have to work at. I instinctively seek out the words, and have to force myself to slow down and look at what's happening.
And yeah, I've had to reeeeaaally adjust might thinking re: canon. I like your point that what might be seen as a weakness can actually be seen as a strength, and would really like to discuss that with you some time. I suspect that in a weird sort of way, the constant reinvention and multiple voices are part of what draws me to comics. I've always had a fascination for heteroglossic texts (I just know I didn't spell that right), from the Bible on down.

And now, I'm rambling ;)
