ratcreature: RatCreature as Spock (trek)

Star Trek movie

I went to see the new Star Trek movie last night: It was a lot of fun.

Admittedly the black hole plot didn't make much sense to me (I mean, is there now some sort of matter sucking anomaly near Earth in this universe? and why didn't anyone else on Vulcan at least try to shoot the giant drill to pieces that was doing something to their planet like they did on Earth later on?), but I liked their reboot approach in principle, and all the characters overall. I also enjoyed the comic relief thrown in, even the silly bits, like with Scotty and the small alien, Bones giving Kirk the faked illness/cures and Kirk's hand and tongue swell and such.

I'm not sure whether I like the destroyed Vulcan when it comes to a longterm impact on the Federation, but it certainly gave Spock even more angst potential. I liked the Spock/Uhura ship, though I agree with all the comments I've seen that wished she had gotten to do some more stuff besides being a romantic interest and awesome with languages in theory, though we never see much of that. Looking back I also agree with everyone on the lack of female characters in general, but while watching I had too much fun otherwise to be bothered much by it.

I've never been a huge TOS fan, having grown up with TNG as the Star Trek I watched as a kid, so I'm not attached to all the details of the characters and their histories, but I thought they did a great job with the characters.

So is there any fannish infrastructure for the rebooted Star Trek universe yet? Communities, newsletters, that kind of thing?

The black hole gave new meaning to sucking plot hole. It was so JJ Abrams. At a less cosmic level, I was annoyed when they went into the atmosphere wearing nothing but space suits and didn't burn up.

I just liked that Uhura was much more present in this movie then she usually was in the original series/movies. I'm still not sure about Spock/Uhura.

Well, it's my birthday on Monday so me thinks I will just pad off to see it. Been thinking about it, then someone said it was rubbish, but if it gets the rat!stamp of approval then I'm in.

But, uh...Spock/Uhura? Mmmm.
