OMG, my poor rat Linus

I have no idea what he did to himself, but he has some sort of horribly infected wound/gash on his belly above his groin. It smells awful, though it is not oozing, but there is a large hard area that is swollen and disgustingly discolored (sort of greenish) and a small gash lower than that that seems to go deeper, and I have no idea what this is, or why my rat looks like a horrible gangrene victim when I didn't see anything wrong with him last night. I should have paid more attention to him this morning or something. I mean, he was not active earlier this day, but I didn't think anything of it, and he did come out just now, and is eating, but I'm afraid how much worse this will get over night. I should have noticed something earlier.

I did put some of the antibiotic wound salve on it and into the gash that I still had left over from when Noah's wound from the blocked sabaceous gland healed, but I'm not sure what good this will do -- or even if the salve is still effective after lying around for a bit, but I don't know what else to do. I never had a rat with a wound that looked and smelled this awful. I looks like I'd imagine would look if someone had let their animal lie around with festering open sores, only I did no such thing. I petted his belly last night, surely I would have noticed? This is really freaking me out. Obviously first thing tomorrow morning I'll bring him to my vet, but that will be eight hours from now, and it didn't seem to have taken long for whatever caused this to go horribly wrong. Like flesh eating bacteria that kill people really fast or something. I hope he'll be okay until morning. I mean, that he still came out and has been eating has to be a good sign, right?

ETA: and of course these things always happen right before the holidays too.
