What I draw never looks like the awesome idea in my head either, I just entirely lack the dicipline to acquire better skills. Though I think in principle drawing is much easier to learn than writing. I tried fanfic writing once in my TS days, because I wanted to participate badly, and I read some books about storytelling and creative writing that came recommended and they were almost entirely unhelpful.
With books that teach drawing you get step by step instructions and exercises in various approaches that tell you what to do like a craft how-to, and also tutorials for specific skills, and you just pick a method you like, and then do the practices to acquire the skill (if you are not lazy like me). The writing books were much less practical. In particular for explaining how to create a story when you don't have one.
