Well landfills are outside so it gets diluted at least. The trash burning powerplant in my neighborhoood that also composts stuff to produce biogas doesn't smell that bad in comparison. I mean, in less than ideal weather it produces a slight sickly sweet rotten smell if you are close, but clearly they don't rot potatoes with whatever fungus it does at home or it would be an environmental hazard.

But this certainly explained why at first I thought my kitchen sink drain must be clogged with something really disgusting that had fermented for a while. It is kind of amazing how an innocuous potato can turn into this liquefied glob of grossness that makes you long for gas mask filtering.
