I've been looking for John/Teyla fic, either shippy/UST or just friendship, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of it. Which surprised me. SGA is such a large fandom and it's not like John/Teyla is a wacky "way out there" pairing or something with minor characters, so I expected there to be a ton of ship fic available. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places. I looked at the John/Teyla category in the memories of the

sga_newsletter, checked the entries of the John/Teyla category tag in

stargateficrec and even browsed Wraithbait, but there wasn't a lot. Of course I found some that I liked, for example I enjoyed most of

tielan's John/Teyla fic, but compared to the gazillion Sheppard/McKay stories out there it seems seriously underrepresented. And it's not just that the slash side is more popular in general (with Sheppard/McKay being more popular than any number of other pairings combined in this fandom), for example it seems there's more John/Elizabeth too (a pairing which doesn't interest me as much).

Anyway, if someone had recs for good (or at least decent) John/Teyla or could point me to the archive places I've missed, I'd love to be pointed in the right direction.

Also, why isn't there more Cameron Mitchell fic of any type for SG-1?

It's bizarre to me. I have dark conspiracy theories, but maybe we can go with the simpler choice that Livia once suggested to me: writing John/Rodney or John/Elizabeth is romance, writing John/Teyla is science fiction. As always, most fanfic writers work in romance.

Well, and there's also the point that Teyla doesn't really seem into him.

And sometimes John doesn't even seem to *like* Rodney, but that has not deterred people. The fandom default is that a fair amount of screen time together = a fair amount of porn.

Yeah. I enjoy reading John/Rodney, but Teyla and John getting together still doesn't seem far fetched to me. And looking at the memories in he newsletter even McKay/Beckett is more popular, which seriously kind of baffles me. But then while I don't *dislike* Rodney, the extent of the McKay love in general in SGA is something I don't quite get.

*nods* Canonical physical attraction of one partner to the other is more than *most* big pairings ever get to work off of, really. So I don't think the answer lies in farfetchedness in itself. I mean, I love John/Teyla in part because it's not yet realized on the show; its subtextual nature makes it all the more pleasing to me. But they just don't have that far to go.

Sometimes when romance becomes explicit on screen it becomes also unfortunately cringe-worthy, and I definitely see the appeal of the pairing options remaining open. Though in general I'm not much of an unconventional pairing shipper. I mean, my favorite het pairing is Farscape's John/Aeryn and I didn't mind at all that they got together on the show. OTOH I would have been much happier if the X-Files had stuck with UST between Mulder and Scully, and not because I liked some other pairing in particular. I guess for me it depends a lot on how the romance is realized and whether what I like about their characters and dynamic gets twisted and diminished by the romance.

True. One of the reasons I'd like to see more John/Teyla fic is the science fiction possibilities their different cultures offer. Especially since we don't know that much about the Athosians and authors could just make up interesting background stuff. Now that I've read SGA for a bit I'm surprised that fanfic in general doesn't explore more possible reactions of the Athosians to the fact that Earth people just moved into Atlantis, with just a few of those present who at least can vaguely claim to be descendants via the gene. Not to mention how the Athosians might view the whole artificial gene thing, considering that they seem to honor the Ancestors. I mean sure, I can buy the view that just everybody is cool with it, especially since the Earth presence offers some a bit better chances against the Wraith (and would offer more if they didn't keep making stupid mistakes, but I digress...), but I can also see that not everybody would be thrilled with the situation.

I've actually had quite a few ideas along those lines, but so far not of the sort that bear fruit in fic rather than meta.

Of course all this would implicate race and imperialism, another reason that fandom might want to steer clear to some degree.

Alas, I can't rec much in the way of John/Teyla. There definitely seems to be a fandom EHHHH against the idea. In my case, I'm exceptionally leery of it because the producers are pushing it and I just got to liking Teyla and I don't want them to do to her what they did to Sam so....Yeah. I multiship but that's the one I can't really get into.

As for Cameron...I love the stuff but can't find much myself.

Yeah, I've read those. I even feedbacked Uninvited, despite my general fb slackerdom.

This is extremely late (and I'm glad you liked most of my J/T fic, although I'm curious which ones didn't appeal and why), but

madjm is all good and in-character,

ladyjax recently wrote a JT-slanted fic called 'Shatter', and

allisnow has been playing 'tennis-fic' with

seldear over on their LJs for about a month now.

I have to admit that a lot of the John/Teyla isn't very good. It's either too stereotypically 'romance novel', out-of-character, or else badly written.

As to why people don't like it...well, that's still a puzzle to me.

Thanks for the recs, I'll check those out. About your J/T fic, IIRC it's not so much that I disliked any in particular, but that very short stories rarely hold any interest for me, so I often don't bother to read vignettes unless the author is an absolute favorite for me, and if I do they just don't do that much for me. It's more about my preferences in general than your writing.

As for writing J/T myself, well, I just don't write fanfic. It's not just that English isn't my native language, or that I'd have a hard time getting the voices right (I don't really hear the characters in my head), I also totally suck at getting plot or story ideas. My one shameful and aborted fanfic attempt was a piece of Sentinel fanfic years ago, which was mostly exposition dump to explore the AU setting I had an idea for. I mean the universe was actually quite cool, but I had a lot more fun to create alternate timelines, fake documents and altered pop culture references and generally world-building for the setting than coming up with a narrative. I was never any good with inventing stories. My few creative contributions to fandom are all fanart.

Ah, okay. I was just curious - it's always interesting to see which stories appealed and which didn't and why.

Oh well, fair enough on the 'not writing fanfiction' front. I'm trying to persuade more people into at least trying John/Teyla instead of just dissing it or ignoring it. Uphill battle all the way.
