It's Ben and Dustin's first birthday! I'm happy to have them (mostly anyway), and noticed I hadn't shared rat pictures in a while, so I present you with a few more recent ones:
Yeah. The funniest thing is how often that surprises people. Like last time I brought Dustin to the vet I ran across one of my neighbors in the stairway and he he saw Dustin in the transport box (Dustin wasn't hiding or anything), and my neighbor asked me "what is it?" when looking at the box. So I said that it was a rat, and he then was kind of baffled. As was I, since you'd expect people to recognize rats, what with them not being exactly rare and exotic animals, but I don't know, people apparently seem to expect huge black monsters with sharp fangs or something.
Yeah, they really are. It helps me through those times when they once again managed to circumvent all my protective measures and decided my comics/books/cables are so much better for chewing during playtime than their mountain of assorted rodent toys and chewing things...
Heh, yeah rats are adorable and great pets (when they don't bankrupt you with vet costs that is, my poor Dustin unfortunately has respiratory problems due to mycoplasma, and had additional bad luck with an abscess recently, so this year alone I'm like €300 poorer because of the medical care he needed, but then that can happen with any pet, I'm just still bitter because I had saved for an mp3 player...)
I have a whole gallery with rat pictures, starting from when my two were just born an didn't even have fur yet. (The woman I got them from sent me baby pictures while I waited for them to reach five weeks.): http://pics.livejournal.com/ratcreature/gallery/00002p51
I feel bad about the myco and the abscess -- Fitz-rat used to do that all the time before he passed away, and I miss him so much. The vet care is so tough, especially since myco is so freaking persistent, ugh.
