that name meme

1. What does your first name mean?

The male form is supposed to have meant "Frenchman" once, so I guess something like "French woman"?

2. What does your middle name mean?

I don't have a middle name.

3. What does your last name mean?

I had to look it up, but apparently it's some variation of what's "Matthew" in English, and the name sites said that its Hebrew origin means "gift of god."

4. So what does your name mean when put together?

Gift of god from France? French gift of god?

5. What would you have been named if you were the opposite gender?

I have no idea, I have never asked my parents. I guess it would have probably also have started with F (see the question below for an explanation).

6. Any other name oddities?

My parents claimed they have named their kids alphabetically, that is because my dad's first name starts with an A, my mother's with a B, my older sister's name starts with C, my brother's name with D, mine doesn't start with E, because my dad has a daughter from his first marriage whose name starts with E, so mine is with F... I was never quite sure whether my parents were kidding about this, or not.

Now [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63's additional questions:

1) Do you like your name?

Yes, I like my name. I dislike most short forms of it though, and some people seem to have problems to stick with three syllables.

2) What do you like best about it?

With my first name, I like its sound, it isn't silly or a "fashionable" name, at least here nobody has problems with its spelling. With my last name, I like that's not unusual, but still not like "Smith."

3) What do you like least about it?

Both my first and my last name are sort of a hassle in English speaking countries. People write it down wrong even when I spell it, obviously not trusting that I really mean the letters as say them (maybe they assume I can't spell in English, this phenomenon has been something of a mystery to me), and when I don't spell it people hear the weirdest things, so that I don't recognize it when they say it.

4) If you HAD to change your name (witness protection program, whatever), what would you want it to be?

I have never thought about this, i.e. about choosing a different name (much less about witness protection programs). So I can't really say, without thinking about it some more. I like female names that end on A like mine does, so I might choose one like that.
