Did I forget about some frelling Christian holiday again? The obnoxious bells of the nearby church (well, two blocks away from me, but it's not as if they weren't designed to be heard widely) have been loudly ringing for some time now, but it's Saturday, not Sunday, and usually the only bells I on Saturday are for the evening service, and that bell call is shorter too.

Gah, the double-paned, noise-reducing windows I have cope well with the traffic noise, but church bells always come through loud and clear. *headdesk*

Hmm, I guess that's possible, but I have never seen any weddings there. I mean, it isn't a particularly old, remarkable, or romantic church. I think it's been build around 1895 or so, and it doesn't even have its original steeple anymore after it was damaged in some fire or something (you can look at pictures of it here). So it's not really a popular church for weddings afaik, I suspect people who bother with marrying in some church ceremony tend to go for the older, more impressive churches, or ones with more famous artwork or architecture.

Well, it's the start of Ramadan, and the Fall Solstice (Mabon), and Rosh Hashanah started at sundown yesterday, so there's lots of holiday stuff going on, just not for Christians. If the church is UU, they could actually be doing something for one/all of the above.

I don't think there even are any UU churches here. (That's Unitarian Universalist, right?) These splintered protestant churches (though is UU even still Christian? I'm never quite sure about that...) like in the US aren't all that common here.

The church in question is Lutheran, as most churches here are (in particular those with larger buildings and bells) because historically this has been a Lutheran area of Germany ever since the reformation. (Obviously there are a few catholic churches and greek- and russian-orthodox churches, and also other denominations because it's a large city, but the "default church" here is Lutheran, just like it would be Catholic in Southern Germany.)

maybe someone died. My community used to do that when I was young. Ring the bell when smo in the community died.

Yeah, could be, though I've usually only heard that done with actual funerals, and there isn't a cemetery nearby, so I don't think they do many funeral services. But then unless the bells wake me up or are ringing just extremely long (like during with the high holidays) I don't pay that much attention, so I'm not very good at deciphering the different messages, seasonal and holiday changes and such.

sometimes the cemetary is very far away; the church and the cemetary isn't always linked anymore. My dad's funeral and his cemetary are like 1 hour driving apart!!!!

I live in Turkey and we get the call to prayer 5 times a day here, but in my new apartment I can barely hear them. In my old apartment, I had a mosque right next door. I kinda miss it, because I got used to it.

I know exactly how you feel. I live one block away from a catholic church and the bells go off 6 days a week at 6:00 am (some bullshit trinity chime that's loud as fuck), 7:00am, 8:00 am, 8:09 am (for some reason the bells chime as loud as possible about 40 times), 9:00 am, 10:00 am, 11:00 am, 12:00pm (another trinity chime loud and obnoxious), 1:00pm, 2:00pm, 3:00pm, 4:00pm, 5:00 pm, 6:00pm (the last retarded trinity chime) 7:00 pm, 8:00 pm and finally I'm allowed some peace and quiet. I really think I'm losing my mind because of these bells.
