I visited the baby rats today! Young rats are just incredibly adorable. They're still tiny, but their eyes are now open, and they are already very lively and curious, but they were not yet at the age were you have no chance to contain their manic energy, so I could pet them without them whizzing around too much.
So I cuddled with them for a bit (omg, their fur is so very soft and fine!) and picked which two I want. The first one I picked is a darker shade of gray, i.e. Russian Blue, than Ben (who is English Blue), but also with a white belly, i.e. a Berkshire pattern like Ben's, and the other one is mostly white with very cute light gray spots. I was promised some more photos of my just two soon. They were all adorable, climbing all over me and already investigating everything. I also already picked names for them. I'm going to call the Russian Blue Berkshire "Gonzo" and the white one with spots "Krümel", both after the muppets. (Krümel is the German name of the Cookie Monster, meaning also "crumb".) They will be five weeks on January 6th, and then I can pick them up. Only two and a half weeks from now! *squeee!*

Looking at your icon reminds me though of what was really surprising, which was that the breeder had a cat who got along fine with the rats, including the tiny babies. I have never seen that before. Dogs, yes, but a cat? Then again, that cat was very mellow. It sat next to me when I cuddled the rat babies and wanted to be petted as well. Though wisely the tiny rats did not attempt to climb on the cat, no matter how mellow it seemed.
