SGA rec

I just finished reading The Wrong Side of the Tracks, by [livejournal.com profile] gaiaanarchy (mostly McKay/Sheppard slash, though other pairings make appearances or are implied), and-- *flail!*

It's a great story, it adapts the Disney movie plot "Lady and the Tramp" into a post-apocalyptic SGA futurefic, and I really don't want to spoil the fabulous twists and character mappings that make the two fit together. In the story Rodney is cast as Lady and John as Tramp while Wraith are Darling and JimDear, which I found a bit weird at first, but it turned out to be an ingenious twist. Rodney has been memory-wiped and is kept as pet, John, as we later learn also has lost his memory, but prefers to roam free, only occasionally slipping under the radar as Wraith worshipper to get his enzyme/gift-of-life kicks (another Wraith Queen is cast as Tony). It shouldn't work so well, but surprisingly it does.

What's really disconcerting is that the story follows the movie in the plot that Tramp has a "happy" ending with Lady by giving up his freedom and becoming a pet, so in the end John and Rodney are both Wraith worshippers leading their Queen, who is affectionate with them after all and is even in favor of things like a more rational and compassionate, i.e. "humane", prey management, to Earth. And I think what affected me so was that this actually made me see the Disney movie in a very different light as well. I mean in it we see dog pounds and Tramp having to be rescued from that, and we meet more "unfortunate" dogs, but it's not as if Darling and JimDear were the Animal Liberation Front wanting to stop the capture and death of all dogs. It was really creepy to realize that it is really just like the happy ending in the movie, yet it is actually a horrific scenario where they betray their own sentient species.
