so, I'm pretty much sitting here with a comic pile...

and no matter what my icon says, I do wonder sometimes whether that statement isn't phrased too boldly. See, I'm kind of intimidated by looking at several shortboxes of DC comics, trying to decide where to start, which comic to pick up.

Of the Marvel, I thought none of the 1602 series lived up to the original; Nextwave looked irreverent and amusing; and Supreme Power got really uninteresting really fast after it's great start.

Y got a bit draggy for awhile, but it's winding down now and it's probably worth catching up to the end. Fables remains the most *consistently* great book on the shelves.

Batman & The Monster Men and Batman & The Mad Monk are way old-school fun if you're in that kind of mood (but not as brilliant as I might have wished from Wagner); and of the entire list, ALL-STAR SUPERMAN was and is my favorite comic of the moment.

I couldn't stomach War Games; Identity Crisis and Infinite Crisis are...difficult and convoluted. Superman/Batman completely lost whatever cracky (ir)relevance it once had.

If you have 'em, both the post-OYL series of Busiek's Superman and Dini's Detective are fantastic, but if you're like me you'd want to read all the stuff that lead up to them. And that's a slog.

GL: Rebirth is post-Identity Crisis and War games, but predates Infinite Crisis by 2 to 6 months in-story time.

Its a retcon-heavy series, so it gives you all the Green Lantern backstory you need to know to understand what's going on, so I do advise it as a jumping on point.

OT, but...

I found Catwoman: When in Rome to be soul-soothing in a lot of ways, so I would recommend leaving that for last, along with some of the Superman/Batman.

Y: The Last Man has been terrific, consistently entertaining and both Pia Guerra and Goran Sudzka artwork complement BKV's storytelling perfectly. The series is almost over (only three issues left) so pick up the trades and start from the beginning - the best way to get into any series.

DMZ I just started reading, and while the artwork isn't my favorite style, it suits the gritty, chaotic atmosphere of the DMZ.

I really, really like Y: The Last Man. I need to read more of it, too (I've just gotten into the first two TPBs.)

Have you read Runaways?
