Y: The Last Man #27-57

I spent much of last night catching up with 30 issues of Y: The Last Man.

First, I didn't notice this as much in monthly reading, but I really like the series' structure that alternates between single shot stories giving more background on the characters or focus on minor characters elsewhere, and the multi-issue stories.

Y: The Last Man #27-57 (written by Brian K. Vaughan, pencils by Pia Guerra and Goran Sudžuka, inks by Jose Marzan, Jr.)

Ring of Truth #27-31
I liked the progress on the mystery, the action was nicely fast moving, and the cliffhangers kept the story tense, starting with Yorick seemingly vomiting up blood (though I can't quite believe that the smell of actual blood vomit wouldn't be different from half-digested tomato soup). I enjoyed the reconciliation he had with his sister, too.

Girl on Girl #32-35
I didn't like this story as much. The action moved readily enough, but I did really care about the whole drug smuggling/ship fight/pirate plot, and thought the idea that vast parts of Australia were opium addicted kind of implausible. I liked the doctor and 355 dancing around each other, though I felt bad that Yorick interrupted their sex causing them to revert to the awkwardness again.

Boy Looses Girl #36
With these dream revelation of Yorick's survival for Beth and the earlier weird amulets I'm starting to wonder about supernatural stuff in this universe. Though of course it could have been just plain hallucinations and wishful thinking for her. Still, this was a nice one-shot, and I liked seeing scenes from their relationship.

Paper Dolls #37-39
And Yorick just doesn't get a break. Now that he's in Australia his fiancee is on her way to Paris... maybe he needs to balance the massive luck it took to be the only guy to survive that plague. And I really hope Allison's new spying girlfriend won't hurt her too much, she has the worst luck picking partners. OTOH at least she gets to have some sex in the meantime. Also, at this point I'm still very confused about all the spy plots.

The Hour of Our Death #40, Buttons #41, and 1,000 Typewriters #42
I like the one-shots giving us more info on the plot threads that branched off to the side and additional background on the characters, not that the things like this weird Culpert Ring are exactly getting more plausible with more backstory, but it is comics, after all. Yorick is really a jerk sometimes though, like in that letter. But my favorite of these was the one following Ampersand.

Kimono Dragons #43-46
Heh, of course the Japanese would have sex-bots. I thought the private investigator and Yorick teaming up like this with a backup plan to trick the Yakuza was neat, and seeing him bond with Agent 355 while they are held captive was fun too. Also I was really relieved that Allison was bad with that sword, even though she got stabbed. For a moment I was worried that she'd turn out to be one of these Asian characters who suddenly reveal their secret ninja abilities.

The Tin Man #47
My main reaction was along the lines that Allison as a butch baby dyke is adorable, even if she's kind of crazy, which seems to come with her mad scientist family.

Gehenna #48
Somehow even Alter's backstory didn't get the whole Israeli army plot and their motivations to make more sense, but maybe it will eventually?

Motherland #49-52
Allison's family is seriously crazy, her father in particular. Also, I have to say if that is really the "explanation" for the plague it makes no sense. I mean, not that I really expected any explanation to be plausible, exactly, but still. Allison and 355 embracing and telling each other that they love the other in that kind of ixnay speech was cute.

The Obituarist #53
I had completely forgotten about Waverly, kind of nice to see her again though, and she's cute with her crossdressing girlfriend. Also I'm now really curious where the rats came from. I mean, I think I've read somewhere that rats can postpone pregnancies (though I may be wrong about that), but with that some might have had young even a while after the male rats died, yet even that wouldn't have helped much if the newborn male rats died again. I wonder whether that'll fit in fit the plague background we got from Allison's father eventually.

Tragicomic #54
Okay, the attempt at meta comic was really just clumsy and lame. This didn't work for me at all.

Whys and Wherefors #55-57
So finally they all converge in Paris, and Yorick meets Beth again. And promptly finds out that she wanted to break up with him. Poor guy. Then she find out he has a kid with another Beth who looks very similar to her. Still for the final arc it's weirdly anti-climatic so far, even with all the Beths meeting. Then again, there's still three issues to go.

Wow, I haven't gotten nearly as far along in the series as I need to. Your point about the one-shot stories vs. multi-character arcs is well taken, though. I wish I could sit down and read 'em all at once!

I think one of BKV's strengths is that in Y, he isn't afraid to let Pia's panels tell the tale, because she's more than good enough to convey the weight of any scene with a single word or zero dialogue. Same with Goran - we're lucky readers to have such great visual storytellers on Y. In a world where so many comics are filled with pin up shots and wannabe cover panels, its nice to see such straight forward, expressive artwork.

It's funny you say that, because when Vaneta interviewed Pia for Newsarama a few weeks ago, Pia criticized her own work thinking she didn't make the faces distinctive enough, and she was worried that people might get characters (I think she mentioned Natalya and Beth 2) confused now that they're starting to appear in the same scenes together.

But I don't think she has anything to worry about. She's done a good job of making sure each character has something visually distinctive about them, and BKV has really developed each character so well that as soon as she spoke one word, there is no question which character is speaking.

I like how Pia gives each character their own fashion sense, too - Hero has the most distinctive look, almost westerny. I could see a silhouette of Hero and still know it was her.

I also like that they gave Beth 2 a scar on her nose. Not only does it make you instantly recognize her, but it plays into her backstory. The scar will be a constant reminder of the plane crash and her role in it, so it lends her character strength. Every day she's faced with her shortcomings, but she continues on anyway.
