I noticed that all my recent rat posts have been either complaints about rodent damage or rat health related, and that it has been quite some time since I posted photos of my rats just being furry and cute.


Here I bribed them with cooked rice to hold still for a moment:

They really are, and take shameless advantage too, like they actually manage the same kind of look dogs have when they pretend to be starving even though you just fed them. They run toward my feet when I walk into the room when they're outside, and look up making pathetic puppy dog eyes, hoping to score a treat...

thank you for the early present, they are indeed cute in their own rattly way.

I once cared for some rats over the holiday AND they survived my care.

I fear though I am a die hard cat person I hope you will not hate me for this.

It's good to know they survived. I take it you didn't keep them with the cat? Though actually the breeder I got Krümel from also had a cat (dogs too) and the little rats grew up with it without problem. It was a very laid back cat: it actually let tiny curious baby rats crawl all over it, and was okay with that.

But I like cats too. All my relatives have cats. They are just more expensive to feed, also I'm vegetarian and a bit grossed out by feeding cats meat, so rats suit me better.

Hehhehe, I guess I'm feeling bad for squicking about what you love. My son wants a pet. We have a cat and are barely responsible enough to keep her in my opinion.

I don't really know beagles, but I can see the resemblence in to (badly trained *g*) dogs at a size more practical for apartment living.

Are they litter-trained? I would actually expect rats to be pretty amenable to house-training. We had a bunch of mice get into the china cabinet a couple years ago who used some small candle-holders as dedicated toilets. They also used some small vases to store seeds, so there was definitely a natural tidiness at work.

Not as a cat is. They do use rodent toilet most of the time, but it's not 100%. Also mine are male rats, so they pee on stuff to mark their territory, and you can't train them out of that.

I was sitting here holding my cat while looking at pictures of your rats. There's something so wrong with that.

They are cute though. I like all animals. I'm a semi-vegitarian. I tried to go lacto-ovo as a teen mostly due to my love of animals, but my body needed more protein than that. I craved it too much. So I switched to semi. (I can live with eating birds and fish.)

I never really missed meat or fish once I decided to stop eating it, and actually haven't lapsed even once in over twelve years now. But I can relate, because I never manage to go completely vegan for more than six months or so at a time, no matter how bad I feel about exploiting, and indirectly killing, cows and chicken.

They totally are, and capitalize on it too every time they make puppy dog eyes at me and produce a "I'm starving!" look to get some more food.

They're adorable. They seem quite social, too. I like Emil's colour.

They are very social. You need to keep at least two, and I think they prefer larger groups.

And yeah, Emil's color is very nice, his kind of dark grey-blue is called "Russian Blue" officially, it's kind of like the color of Chartreux cats.

Ok, ratcreature, you got me - they ARE cute! Not as cute as in your icons, though! (The sheer number and variety of your signature icons on your site - adorability to the nth degree!) However, one can't expect real life to be as cute as art, anyway, can one???

Well, real life rats are furrier and better to cuddle though compared to art. ;)
