Ignatz is doing better. He's started to venture out of his house more often, picked different sleeping spots sometimes and has been coming out to greet me when I'm near the cage doors, so he's not that lethargic anymore. He's really annoyed with the antibiotics though, and unfortunately spit some of the medicine out. I had a bit more than needed in the needle-less syringe I shoved into his mouth (the vet said I shouldn't give it mixed into food), so I hope I got something like a dose into him.

Meanwhile Emil is not pleased at all with the current state of affairs either, because parts of his cage are closed to him, and things are much more boring too, what with no brother to snuggle and scuffle with.

I tried to take photos of Ignatz' throat, but I he didn't really cooperate with me, so I only have a picture that shows one side of his shaved throat and the fetching silver glitter stuff they covered him in (some sort of disinfectant I assume), and a blurry one taken through the cage door as he was drinking.

That first one is a great picture -- I can see why you're so fond of the little guy! I'm glad he's getting better, even if they're both fussing at your restrictions.

Yeah, he's definitely grown on me, but then I've had him since he was a tiny little rat, only five weeks old, and I have even baby pictures of him from back when he was just born and didn't have fur yet. So I hope he heals well and I'll have a little more time with him. I've noticed that there is a lot more swelling in his throat area tonight than yesterday, but I assume that this kind of thing is a normal side effect after having a huge tumor cut out of you. I guess I should have asked the vet more about that, how it is supposed look. The stitches look okay though, and he doesn't seem in pain when I gently touch the swelling, so I hope it doesn't mean anything to dire. I may call the vet again on Monday though to make sure...

Yeah, he looks like someone got to him with a glitter pen. The area has swollen more today than it was yesterday, but I hope it is just some normal side effect from having such an operation, because otherwise he seems much better.

How cute! I used to raise rats as pets eons ago. I love them. They have so much personality. I could never get them to stay in the cage, though. Smart buggers. I had one that would sleep with me. I'm glad Ignatz is doing better.

I used to have that problem when I had a crappy rodent cage with tiny doors that just closed with a latch. My cage now has doors that lock and it is all metal, so no way they can chew their way out.

Yeah, me too. The whole area has swollen quite a bit since, but I hope it is just some normal side effect after having such an operation, because otherwise he eats and doesn't seem sick, so I hope it doesn't mean anything dire. I'll probably still call the vet tomorrow to make sure though.
