At first they were more mouse sized that rat sized, but in the last week they have grown quite a bit already, so they get closer to a proper rat format every day.
That's too bad. My place forbids cats and dogs, but small pets are allowed as long as they don't bother the neighbors. And just a couple of rats don't smell that much and they don't make much noise either.
Yeah, landlady is a bit strict after what happened that originally led her to the 'no pets' decree. Oh well. Right now I'm not really in any shape to take care of a pet, let alone myself. Painmeds have a way of doing that.
Yeah, rats can be quite a bit of effort. I mean, you need at least two, and they don't live that long, and they get health problems that mean a lot of vet visits and costs, plus the stress of giving them medications (I once had a rat that needed four different meds given at three times a day for a time, which was about as much fun as it sounds). I've rarely had a rat that didn't many vet visits eventually (including operations, diagnotistic x-rays, medication, lab tests...) that amounted to many hundred euro per rat too.
It was a big change for them from living with a large group of rats with the breeder to just the three of them, but I hope they'll like it with me.
Today I bought them a ferret climbing tree (like the scratching things for cats only on a more rat friendly scale) to give them more amusements and climbing opportunity during playtime once they get more comfortable outside. It has several platforms, a tunnel, a cave to hide and a hammock. I just shouldn't be allowed in pet stores. I'm so whipped... LOL
Computer case? I'm afraid their cage is nothing that DIY. It's a rat cage from a metal manufacturer who has a sideline in modular rodent homes that are sturdy and of a decent size.
It's great to have rats live with me again. And now that they've settled in they even let me cuddle them already. Though they are still cautious when it comes to playing outside.

I want a rat. I really do. But landlady says no pets.

I think I'm probably going to have to wait no matter what. But I'll admire your rats in the meantime.
