a yawning rat

I finally managed to take a photo of one of my rats while he's yawning, which is the cutest thing ever. Though on photos slightly less so than in RL, because it's the whole motion that is cute.

So last night I saw Leo and Noah yawning (yawns catch among them too), but of course by the time I had my camera they were just plain snuggled up again. Which is also cute, so I photographed that, but then I thought, why not try yawning at them while I have my camera in hand? And this worked. I'm not entirely sure it was due to my yawn, or how well rats can see such things, but I yawned at them, and Leo yawned back, and I got it on photo.

It really is. And I'm feeling really happy that I managed to get it on photo for once. Which probably says a lot about my underachiever's scale of accomplishements, but still: YAWNING RAT!

That is adorable! I was expecting a cat-type yawn (ie., where do they put their brain when they yawn? They open like muppets) but this looks just like cartoons (which is also, of course animators study the animals).... Anyway. Adorable!

Yeah, cat yawns are quite different. Maybe because they are predators? But you're right, rat yawns look just like in the cartoons.

Cuteness is their not-so-secret superpower... The thing of how the nose scrunches up just a little bit in their yawn slays me every time.

I was very happy to finally manage to get a yawning picture. Though yawning at them really seemed to have an effect, so maybe you could try that.

(It reminds me of a pleasant afternoon of nothing much, one spent sitting around with a roommate and, among other things, making her dog yawn.)

Heh. It could have been coincidence of course, but I really think yawning at him was what triggered it. Which was cute in itself.

Heee. I was all prepared (not being a rat person, in particular) to not see the cuteness, but I CAN SEE THE CUTENESS OMG!

I think few can resist the moment when a rat really turns on its cuteness powers. Random people when I bring them to the vet find them cute (and my rats are disgruntled then) and often for some reason don't realize it is a rat they are looking at. One woman once thought my rat was a guinea pig! wtf? I guess because the mental image of rats as vermin is very strong.

Yes. And the cuddliness is not a false impression. Leo is one of the cuddliest rats I've ever had. You can just pick him up and snuggle with him and pet him, and he doesn't try to get away. (the positive side of him being rather lazy for a rat of his age)
