I watched the first Game of Thrones ep

Um, I admit that in general I'm not good with fiction that has a large cast (whether written or filmed), so maybe it's my problem. But, were you supposed to follow this without knowing the books? (which I don't) I already had prepared with having that nice HBO-provided guide on hand to keep track of the names and such, but I was still rather lost.

I haven't read the books either but fortunately I had my husband next to me (who has memorized all the books) so every time I had one of those "So who is this guy again?" moments, I could ask him.

Where would one get such a guide? *is interested*

and identifies all the people and their houses and family relations. There is also some background on the universe, and I haven't read all the stuff yet, but it was rather helpful to keep track.

I don't think so. It seems very screen oriented.

I didn't have a problem with it, and I haven't read the books. I do tend to be pretty good with large cast TV dramas, though, which is weird because I have a lot of problems matching names and faces in person!

Hm, I think my main problem was that usually I follow tv action just by the faces and tend to completely forget names unless I read them a lot in fanfic. That is true with a small cast as well. That is okay as long as people just interact, not so much when they are also talking about each other and mention important things, like establishing their relationships. In addition just from listening I wouldn't have been sure what the names were. But rather than just giving names and faces the HBO also shows you all the family relations, dead relatives, some extra history and world building, so maybe it was hindrance as well as well, because I might just have ignored some of that extra stuff and still followed the plot.

I don't know. I've read the books a couple times and I came away feeling like they'd just scratched the surface, but while they certainly hit the highlights, if felt a little jumpy. It was a little dark too, and I was finding that I couldn't see people very well. That might just be me though.

I almost always think that tv is too dark.
