...when you can't be bothered to prepare anything and don't have any chocolate at home for direct eating besides: whip some cream with cocoa powder and sugar in it. Of course it is nowhere near as delicious as, say, mousse au chocolat, but still quite tasty.

All the foodies, whose "simple" recipes involve ten ingredients and half an hour effort, are probably frowning in despair at people like us...

I'm capable of seriously complex things. Sometimes I don't want to bother. Sometimes you want to read War and Peace, and sometimes you just want to watch Star Trek.

I can make fairly elaborate dishes too (not sure about "seriously complex" but I can follow advanced recipes without problem and can improvise building on the basics I know too), though the last few years I haven't often made the effort, because I'm just cooking for myself. And also due to financial issues my food budget has shrunk while food price inflation has been going strong :(, so that put a damper on buying fancier ingredients or even just stuff I'd just need for one recipe and then won't use up and things like that.

Things that are "seriously complex" in my book include anything that takes more than an hour or requires freezing. I've been making ice cream of late, and I think that's pretty complicated.

What I think of as "seriously complex" are recipes that are very intolerant to even slight missteps, like you have to get the timing and/or temperature exactly right, also multi-dish, multi-course arrangements, that involve coordinating several dishes within a kitchen to come together right.
