computer woes, continued
I exchanged the RAM module, and the store gave me a different model in the hope that would work better, however it doesn't. With this one my computer won't start at all, not even showing the BIOS version and the RAM test, it's just a black monitor to the sound of my CPU fan. Once I got the RAM out again, my computer started with the BIOS setup, announcing that "During the last boot your system hung for improper frequency combination.", so at least with the default BIOS settings (which I never changed) the new RAM is incompatible with the rest. Now I have to go to the store again, hoping for the best, which I can do Thursday at the earliest because the store is closed tomorrow and New Year.
Obviously within today's computers the parts are too complex and variable for any kind of predictability of what will and will not work, leaving only trial and error. This sort of reminds me of the Star Trek: TNG holodeck, a highly complex and not really controllable technology they use nonetheless, even though in irregular intervals something goes really wrong with it. Of course my uncooperative hardware sucks on a smaller scale, so at least I won't have to deal with my PC producing intelligent offspring or something anytime soon.
