perpetually feeling out of the loop in fandom

Is there some sort of big current wank/kerfuffle going on right now that I've been totally oblivious to? Somehow I never notice these things even if I'm in a fandom at the time they are happening.

I've seen vague references while browsing my network reading list, but as is usual for me I couldn't connect it to anything. They could maybe be referring to the YOI wank that was even featured in this week's OTW newsletter. (A wank I incidentally also missed happening on Tumblr, but then I'm not into YOI though it appears on my dash from time to time because I'm into Check Please! and there is overlap in fans.)

But I'm not sure. I always miss these things.

What's been going around my reading list is not so much a big new wank as a bunch of ongoing Tumblr bullies in omgcp fandom deciding to switch targets to someone who had a lot of dw friends. (The bullies aren't on dw, thank goodness, but a lot of dw people are talking about it here.)

I dont know if that's what you're seeing or not. But there's been a fair amount of vagueblogging about it that would be on your network page.

Yeah it's probably that. It does seem to be about Tumblr bullies using "social justice" as fig leave for fanfic purity crusades and such.

I haven't heard a lot about this in OMGCP on Tumblr (compared to say the crap the HTP adjacent spaces apparently have to deal with on an ongoing basis), but then I don't pay a lot of attention to text post on Tumblr, but mostly look at pictures and read the fic at AO3, and there I often don't read comments, so the most I notice of this kind of dogpiling and bullying is ripples that show in tags and authors notes and such.

MY corners of fandom have wank in Voltron and Yuri on Ice, both involving what some people react as "omg (perceived) underage (18 and less) characters should not be shipped/feature in any fanworks because that's pedophilia". This has led to idiotic debates about what is "pure and okay" and what is "terrible and enforcing real danger to real human beings", in regards to ships, fan media, and kinks.

Alternatively, in Voltron last week there's been a leak of canon material. The studio asked people who were sharing the leaks on tumblr and twitter to take down the leaks, as it was hurting the studio. They were answered with blackmail: "Make my ship canon or I'm keeping this up." Yeaaah.

Wow I had not heard about the Voltron thing, that is kind of mind boggling. O__o
