Do they really think that the pandemic is going to be better by Christmas, after winter and the school year will have been going on for months, than in October? That release date is like some vanishing cryptid, always just around the corner.

They're going to hope, desperately, that they can release their summer movies at a time when people are actually willing to go to theaters to see them and before the movie industry goes collectively bankrupt.

It seems a big gamble to wait for all big markets to have a pandemic lull at the same time. Maybe flexible dates would have been better in this case. I mean, I still watch things in cinema even if they open after the US, even though I prefer simultaneous releases.

They could have shown things earlier in places like New Zealand, probably China too, and infections are currently rising in much of Europe, but early August wasn't that bad, and I'm pretty sure a good number of people could have been attracted into cinemas, but didn't get releases because some important US regions were bad. Now things are deteriorating here.
