Apparently AIs that mimic neural networks start hallucinating if they work too long continuously on their task and need to rest with some static white noise type input? (Here's a press release by the Los Alamos lab researching this.) So it looks like all the SF where androids wouldn't need rest breaks was a bit too optimistic on the artificial brains being more efficient than ours...

Yeah. It's also really interesting that this sort of system simulating brains could maybe help us better understand why we need sleep, and what we get out of it. (I comment as my own sleep schedule is once again totally messed up...)

Sleep apparently goes back even as far as nematodes, so there must be some intractable problem with always-on neural awareness that Mother Nature hasn't been able to solve in 100 million years. (Other than dolphins, who apparently sleep half their brain at a time.) Maybe these AI models will finally reveal why this problem exists. Very cool.

Yeah. It's kind of weird that the need for such a break is not only a biology thing, but certainly interesting.

It really is. I had always assumed sleep must be a biological thing, but maybe not.
