posting meme: mountains vs ocean

dine prompted: let me know your feelings on mountains vs ocean for vacation spots. or is there something else you prefer?

Ocean, definitely. I haven't actually been to mountains often (I don't do winter sports or anything like that, nor do I climb, though I like moderate hiking), but I love being near the sea. I'm not much of a swimmer nor do I like sunbathing, but walking along shores or cliffs, looking at waves and smelling and hearing the ocean is great. The couple of times I've been on the ocean with ferries and such, I liked that experience too.

Unfortunately I don't live by the sea directly, though I am still in the area of the river estuary that gets significant tides and coastal storm impacts, so the sea is definitely nearer for outings too.

Oh yes, ocean every time! I do live quite near the ocean (about 15km away) and it's not a good one for swimming as it's very very rough and very cold (straight from Antarctica!) But it's great for walking along the cliffs and watching the water.

Oceans are quite soothing (as long as you are safe from them at least), and they have the bonus that you generally don't have yo do the extra work of walking uphill or even climbing to get the good views.

my sister is also an ocean person; while I do enjoy it, I'd usually opt for mountain meadows for peace and quiet

Getting to quiet mountain meadows takes a lot of extra work though, as you have to climb mountains to reach them, or at least hike uphills... I mean I visited a great meadow trail in the Rocky Mountains once on a US vacation, but it took hours of walking to get to the really good spot.

so true! there's no way I could do it anymore, but I still dream of a peaceful retreat. maybe I need a helicopter to get me there. and someone to set up a bench to sit on, as I couldn't get up from the ground without a hoist

Yesss, team ocean all the way! I like a moderate hike too, but I loooove the sea. I like swimming in the sea, too, and I love ferries! I never sleep better than on a ferry.

I love London but I wish we were nearer the sea; I loved my six months in an Italian seaside town.

Unfortunately living by the sea seems to be either expensive or inconvenient (like the remote spots with not great infrastructure, like -- I have an aunt who lives on a hallig in the North Sea and she has a lot of ocean, sometimes right to her front door, but it's not the most convenient living).
