What's with those character hate communities?

I've known for a while about [livejournal.com profile] dierondie but I'd always thought this kind of community was a weird HP thing. I mean after years in HP fandom I still don't get what all those "elite" and "sorting" and "elite sorting" communities or whatever are for, and what their point is, so I never really wonder anymore about strange HP fandom phenomena.

But now I've seen [livejournal.com profile] kill_dr_weir appearing in the [livejournal.com profile] sga_newsletter in SGA. And my first reaction to the community name was "WTF? SGA has them too?!?" Then I looked at its info, and from the community description it doesn't seem to be exactly the same thing, since the SGA one is "just" for fiction killing Elizabeth and less overtly about outright character hate, but still. Unlike with Ron, whom I really like, I'm somewhat indifferent to Elizabeth, yet I really don't get what's the fun with character hate.

On a total random note, I had a really nice SGA/Supernatural crossover dream last night featuring Sam, Dean and Zelenka, that is Sam and Dean were hunting something and Zelenka was a more or less clueless civilian they had to work around. I think it was set at some college somewhere. Anyway, I don't remember details anymore, but it was very cute.

Ten years in fandom and I've still never figured that one out myself. It seems like a waste of energy to me. You only get so many hours in a day and only so much energy to play with, why waste it on investing it characters you *don't* like when there's so much to be done with the ones you *do*?! And having been in some fandoms with characters I've loathed, I always thought it was a bit...silly. :-p

Back in my Star Trek:TNG days, I remember one zine with a "Get Wesley" section: stories torturing, maiming, killing, and otherwise "getting" Wesley Crusher. To this day I don't understand why the poor boy deserved so much attention.

"OMG, Wesley's such a Mary Sue and he takes too much time away from the other characters so the solution is to write fic about him!"

Ahh, fandom, you crazy. :D

And I liked Wesley, too. But what do I know, I also liked RIKER.
