Jericho...
Is it just me or is Jericho kind of boring? I've watched the first four episodes (so please don't spoil me for the newest one, as of yet I'm still undecided whether I'll stick with it further) and somehow the nuclear endtimes are a lot less exciting than I thought they would be. Granted there's the mystery surrounding the (possibly) sinister black guy, who apparently isn't an ex-cop and somehow needed to fake his whole family's history, and the other mystery of what that guy who left the town did during the five years that he's so closed mouthed about, but that after four episodes I still can't remember a single name of the main characters isn't a good sign. Okay, so I'm bad always with names until they become reinforced through frequent fandom reading, but normally I remember at least one or two after a couple episodes of the characters I rather like. But so far none of the characters are all that interesting. Anyway, so far it's all very blah.
And why is the LJ time still wonky?!?

I figure the mystery 5 years out of town guy ran away from home to join the navy and spent some of the five years in the brig. (If he really was in San Diego, there is (or was) a huge Navy base there. And unless his dad and brother are *really* dicks, I can't see them being that upset with him just for joining the Navy.)
And I think the black guy had inside info and decided on Jericho as a good bet in the event of WW3. He may be awol, or maybe he worked for a company that was contracting to the Department of Defense. I'm leaning more toward the former; his fluency with morse code makes me think he was a communications specialist.

On paper, and as far as his family knows, he probably works for a US gov't military intelligence agency. And he probably told them that the cover-up is so that their new neighbors won't suspect that he knows more than they do.
The one thing I totally can't figure out is this:
"We had a stay at home mom, which is bull because she worked all the time because our dad was never around."
In the US, unless dad is a military grunt or works as a carnie, him never being around would imply that he's off earning a fairly significant amount of money. Enough money that mom could be stay at home, even if careful budgeting might be required.
So unless the daughter was exaggerating a 40 hour work week, 'get home two hours after school lets out' job (either because she likes working or just wants money for not-so-careful budgeting) as 'worked all the time', that just doesn't add up.
