some quick comments on tv I watched recently

Criminal Minds squicked me so much this week. Like many others I found the eye gouging and eye injury thing horrifying, but the way the killer refined his tool also made me just wonder about eye removal/manipulation tools in general, and it idly occurred to me that I have no idea what actual doctors use for a tool when they need to pull out an eye to work on it. (I sensibly chose full anesthesia rather than a local when they operated on my right eye some years ago, and needed to do stuff to the back of it, even though the crazy people doctors offered me that they could do this while I was awake. So I didn't see whatever they used to pull my eye forward. Well, it probably wasn't a scoop at least, though likely still gross. Gah. I need to think about something else.)

Morgan and Garcia were cute at least in this ep, though I'm a bit frustrated that Morgan still doesn't see how problematic it is that he is more or less dating that victim's relative, and now keeps that secret too.

I'm really liking this Friday Night Lights season so far, and several of the new characters have potential. Though I have to admit that I found the jersey burning scene with the its artificial pathos ridiculous, and can't believe that kind of thing would ever work on anyone. I didn't understand why along with the apology Coach didn't explain his reasoning for the forfeit, which I understood were that he would have risked aggravating their injuries into more serious or permanent ones, which couldn't have been good for any future chances, not to mention the players' health.

I also wasn't fond of the grouchy eccentric artist type because it was so cliched. Why couldn't for once an artist be a fairly normal professional? I honestly can't imagine the "eccentric asshole hermit with poor hygiene" act would work well for anyone who wants to live from their art. Unless perhaps they are really famous and can afford to cultivate some weirdo image (and have a capable agent who does all the selling and marketing and presents them right without pissing off the customers). But in general I'd expect that a fine artist doing this for a living would need a fair amount of professionalism and people skills to achieve things like getting their work displayed in galleries and selling it to someone and so on, no matter how brilliant. Yet in tv series more often than not you either get wealthy yuppies hanging out in galleries and lofts or socially maladjusted freaky types like this one as working artists.

I guess he could show a completely different side of his personality when he interacts with potential buyers than while he exploits his "intern" as unpaid labor (rather than having thought about the educational aspect that is supposed to there too -- that's fairly common after all), but I would have liked it better if the guy had been more professional with Matt and still not liked his art. I can see why he wouldn't care much for Matt's drawings and be blunt about it, especially as they seemed fairly mismatched in their interests (unless Matt wants to check out metal sculpture instead of his illustration work, it's not like one kind of art is much like the other), but his attitude towards Matt before that was beyond rude even if he just sees him as cheap labor. Like, no proper introduction or brief talk what to expect, and he couldn't even lend a pair of work gloves to someone hauling sharp metal for him?

I wish Supernatural would just stop with all the meta stuff and instead do some regular MOTW episodes, without making it about tv or the fans or slash or whatever self-referential thing they find clever any given week. I only gathered from other people's commentary that the hospital series was supposed to parody Grey's Anatomy, because I never watched that. So that wasn't all that funny for me. I didn't get what the opening sequence was supposed to be either, beyond "sitcom". So that was rather meh too. The Knight Rider thing was funny, and the commercial mocking was a bit old, but still amusing, especially considering last week, so it's not like all the jokes fell flat for me, but for me this episode wasn't really a highlight.

Also I found the Trickster as its own entity more interesting than making it part of the angelic family drama too, but I can live with that.

Agh! I feel you on the Criminal Minds episode. I was eating, and I had to stop, because I was so ill. Eyes are a big squick thing for me, I'm hyper-sensitive about it, and ugh. CM is kinda gory and gross this year so far.

I'm really disappointed in Morgan lately. Though he and Garcia are still adorable. And I'm still crazy worried about Hotch. :S

Amen with the meta on spn, although this one didn't rub me as badly as some of the others. It just doesn't seem to stop, and next week there's more? That looks like it's going to be making fun of the fans again?
