seriously, "Scones"??

In case you wonder, I'm not baffled because of the tasty food, but because I encountered this pairing smoosh for McCoy/Scotty for the first time in the wild just now. I'm waiting for the inevitable "Scones & Spork" label on fiction with several pairings. It just makes you to want to eat it up, I guess, which the the boring "K/S, Mc/Sc" of the olden days just can't accomplish.

I'm just never getting used to these, am I?

It took me a moment to work out where 'ones' came from.

Yeah. I mean, I saw the header "scones... please" in a fic search community and with scones not even capitalized, so at first I was thinking they were looking for some fic with actual *scones* in it, or some food fetish thing. It's not like that would have been such a strange request of fic search comms, the recent searches on SGA comss one subject was something about twinkies, and another about hot chocolate (and that's not even the bizarre ones). So it took me until the body of the entry, where they mentioned McCoy and Scotty fic, to realize that this was supposed to be a pairing name.

I use them sometimes when they are very common in a fandom, like McShep or Snarry, and just can't avoid picking up the habit, but mostly not. And really, Scones? I seriously thought they were looking for foodfic as I skimmed down my flist.

I hate hate hate these pairing names. Ugh. I will often avoid a story that has one in the headers, even if I like the pairing.

Oh good grief! That's even stupider. If you're trying to get help in finding something, it seems like clarity rather than being cutesy might be most important.

Hate hate hate. I've just started reading Iron Man fic and I've found Pepperony for Pepper/Tony. That makes my teeth hurt.

Well, I try to be zen about it, as little can top Roswell with its wacky naming scheme, and I coped with that. And at least it is not all that common in Trek. (though I do hope my repeated grumbling does its little part so that it stays this way *g*)

I just ran into a discussion in SG-1 about whether Jack and Sam ought to be Sack or Jam -- which is worse?

If I only had those two choices to name the pairing I'd definitely go for Jam. Sack sounds more like an insult. Thankfully non-smooshes remain an option.

Unfortunately I suspect that the way fandom swings recently, half the readers would assume Jam was a smoosh for Jim Kirk/Sam Kirk brother incest with that header. (ETA: though maybe that would be countered by the -cest naming trend and it would be Kirkcest? but still, ambiguous)

But Jam is already taken by Jim/Pam from the Office! unfortunately, I am not even joking. So if people wanted to use it for some other pairing, they'd definitely have to list the fandom, or they might end up with irate Jim/Pam fans in their comments.

Yeah, it's so short that it is ambiguous. Also common names anyway. If you wanted to smoosh, you probably should pick a last name smoosh. O'Narter? Careil?

Things in headers that will make me never ever open any of those stories: Ridiculous cutesy smoosh names, and the word smex. I HATE these with the fire of a thousand suns. 500px wide banners on every chapter in a comm post is probably the visual equivalent of these textual irritants.

argh, yes, "smex", I loathe that with burning hatred as well. I sometimes pick up using smooshes when they are very common, like Snarry or McShep, but I try to avoid this. And this wasn't even a story, it was a genre search, so skimming I thought they were looking for foodfic!
