I just thought I remembered from earlier canon that John had been co-owner or something? (Though I could be wrong about that.) And if he had been at that point already, then he would not have believed Anna's ploy. So he must have been just an employee before the homicidal angels. And I thought it was a kind of disturbing implication that his boss' death made the room for John to advance in the mechanics shop.
