WTF, Argentina?

Not a single goal? Here I had counted on you to put a damper the football craziness (and its related inconveniences for the non-football fans) here, and instead you let yourselves be beaten this badly, and now it's worse than ever. Just -- WTF, Argentina? You seemed so certain you'd win, too.

I guess, I ought to be less Scrooge-like and be happy that other people are having fun, but do they have to honk this much?

I'm sorry, but I'm selfishly satisfied with the result. The vuvuzelas are dead in Buenos Aires now, and I can already feel my crankiness going down.

Though I've been told the ones sold in Germany are already a noise reduced kind (incredible as that seems), because the regular vuvuzelas wouldn't have been allowed as too likely to cause serious ear damage. So maybe you need the noise break more.

I think I'd cope better with the noise if it was the only World Cup thing I'd have to notice, rather than the last straw on top of with everything orienting itself towards football from every conversation to the news.

That exactly. ":-( I wanted to cut off so many heads that night -- as if the heat didn't make it hard enough to sleep!

Even after the intermittent honking and trumpeting finally had mostly stopped around one in the morning here, there were drunks shouting and "singing" groups and frequent police sirens, both worse than on usual weekends.

I must be the only person who hasn't heard these vuvuzelas. From what I've heard/read other people saying, that's a good thing, y/y?

So yeah, I'd say not hearing them is a good thing. (Though where have you been hiding that you haven't heard them at least on tv?) Basically it's just really loud plastic trumpets, and the ones here seem about as loud as car horns if someone really tries to go all out, only more discordant.

Well, thankfully these events are of limited duration one way or another, though it'll be good for there to be conversation topics besides football again. Also not almost all news viewed through a football lense (like the G20 meeting headline was about Merkel and Cameron meeting to view the match, the most recent budget cuts discussion headline was about the costs of Merkel flying to South Africa to cheer for the team and inviting other politicians, some which declined for budget reasons...)
