Merlin episode reaction
The opening scene was great, if rather bleak and foreboding with all the dead soldiers. And I almost felt sorry for Uther, the way he's first missing Morgana and is then played. Though the apparitions of his execution victims put that into perspective.
I've seen some comments that would have liked Morgana to be shown more nuanced, or conflicted or the like, but I'm not that invested in her, and I think of her more or less being past that at this point after last season plus a year with Morgause, and now just resolved to her course, and I'm not sure I'd have been that interested in seeing much time spent with her dithering. I didn't mind that she was ruthless when it came to killing the guard and such. It's not like he was a helpless civilian, even if he didn't do anything to her right then, he was a member of Uther's military, and she wants to overthrow Uther and have another king invade. The constant looks of scheming evil in her scenes were a bit much though.
I really liked the scenes with Arthur and Gaius, when Gaius wanted him to take over from Uther and all the Arthur angst. I also liked the Cenred and Morgause bits.
And the scene at the end with Merlin in chains and calling on the dragon was great, though I wonder whether Morgause will kick herself for indulging in this type of convoluted, showy supervillain plot by letting him be disposed via magical scorpions rather than having just whacked off his head as a sure thing. Of course Merlin is the main character so that wasn't about to happen. Merlin in magical chains was a nice touch though.
Similar to the shirt-less Arthur eye candy earlier, when he emptied that bucket on Merlin. Merlin arranging for him to be hit with a mace was a bit much for me, even with armour I can't see how that wouldn't result in at least a hampering injury with serious bruising or the like, though I guess we were supposed to take it as slap-stick cartoon violence?
But overall I really enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to next week.
