It's not so much the killing as such, or the ruthlessness, it just feels like, I'm not sure, maybe more casual now? I haven't counted how many humans he's killed before as Angel without missing a beat, so maybe it's all in my head, but he doesn't even seem to try fighting someone and then kill him only as last resort, but to just kill the opponent right away, no matter whether it's a human or not.
Yeah, I'm not absolutely convinced on the "he's not killed humans before!" argument I've seen, but there is a definite change of some sort, either more ruthlessness, or more practicality. It may be that as the only one who remembers the events of the last year, he has a greater determination to get rid of evil and less desire to make allowances. Additionally, with the loss of Cordy and Connor, and nobody around him even remembering Connor, he probably feels more isolated, and more determined than ever to protect those under his care.
