So, still being bored and listless I, as notorious AU junkie, found myself looking for Harry Potter AUs tonight. And clearly it's a shame that in all those sorting hat quizzes I'm never sorted into Gryffindor, for I am (apparently) fearless and lacking in common sense, and thus browsing ff.net without guidance. And there I found this summary:
Unicorn Child by Felinity
AU What if Voldemort had killed Lily and James Potter but only attacked Harry 3 years later? At the age of 4, after defeating Voldemort, Harry is alone and scared and runs away. He is taken in by a herd of unicorns. Will he ever return to "his kind" again?
which improved my mood greatly (and I hope the neighbors don't mind loud laughter in the middle of the night too much). I haven't tried the story, since unicorns really aren't my thing, so for all I know it's a great story if you dig unicorns. I mean, it got nearly a thousand comments for its seven chapters, so apparently it works for its readership, and I have enough peculiar kinks myself to get that-- and yet. Taken in by unicorns. *giggle*

my latest favorite (well beside the joshtin dolphin fic i already mentioned in my lj) was the one where lance falls in love with a 50+ year old widower he sees in the audience from stage...and then after many happy years together they die in a virtual reality chamber together, surrounded by the other guys while watching NSYNC footage...i kid you not!!!
so, i think i'll pass on the unicorns and go back to crying justins and diary writing joshs :-)

As for the unicorns...I skimmed a bit (especially past the parts with unicorns called Serenity and Stardust) but it seems in the interim period after his parents' death Harry lived with the Dursleys, then Voldemort tries to kill him there (I have no clue why the protection wards don't work here) and apparently the forest with the unicorns is really close to the Dursleys' suburban home, so there's no problem for young Harry to get there. Or something.

well, i better shut down the computer..living in a third world country as i do *g*, our electricity usually goes out with big thunderstorms (which is pretty much daily these days considering we're almost subtropical). there are definitely days i miss german perfectionism and DIN...

Yeah, it's definitely nice when powerlines don't go down regularly with storms and such. I mean, okay, thunderstorms here aren't as bad as some I've seen in the US, but still, I'm constantly surprised how unreliable basic services seem to be in the US. People there seem to think that's some kind of law of nature that you have to accept regular power outages. In my lifetime I can't remember a single time electricity didn't work because of some larger problem than a broken fuse. Admittedly the climate is a bit nicer wrt huge natural disasters here, and I'm in a city so there's not much chance of something falling on a powerline, but it's not like you don't get thunderstorms in summer, and pretty severe winterstorms with flooding and lots of property damage. And yet I actually don't even think of turning off appliances just because of storms and/or lightening.

I soooo wanted to be a Centaur when I was a kid -- I'd write this where Harry had 'Horse-Body'-Envy.....LOL
