Twitter is more erratic by the hour

I'm contemplating whether I shouldn't put the effort in to make myself a "eating popcorn" icon because of the Twitter mess, after years of deciding that I don't need one for online kerfuffles etc., because I tend to just miss drama, and then my "under a rock" one works when I catch up eventually.

I mean, I barely had time to notice the hastily introduced new "official" check marks, before reading a tweet that apparently they got killed again not a day later? But clearly this train wreck overall will go on for a while...

Mastodon servers are getting hammered with refugees, so there must be noticeably fewer ad views now on Twitter. It may be a while longer, though, before we see data on whether advertisers give up beyond these short-term holds, but that's probably why Musk is contemplating charging everyone money to use the site. I've settled comfortably into Mastodon for microblogging. I haven't uninstalled Twitter from my smartphone yet, but I am using it far less frequently since I have another source of text now. And for the moment, at least, it's far less "doomscroll-y" an experience than Twitter was. I've already followed Neil Gaiman (yes, that one), Naomi Wu, Plague Poems, and local Minnesota curmudgeon PZ Meyers on Mastodon, so I don't really need any other "short-form text" site for entertaining thoughts. :D
