Books
So far this year (since January 1) I've read Margaret Killjoy's The Immortal Choir Holds Every Voice, listened to the audiobook of Alexandra Rowland's Running Close to the Wind, am reading Victoria Goddard's Plum Duff, and started Evelyn Araluen's The Rot.

Games
Quoting my own complaint elsewhere: the worst part of Hollow Knight is the runbacks. Each time my desktop switches itself off I need to turn it on again, restore my browser tabs and do other "just booted" chores, see what troubleshooting data I can get now, check what steps I can take next, then start the game again to find out whether whatever I tried this time worked. Then two minutes later my computer crashes.

Have also been doing Redactle and Squardle with [personal profile] kaberett, and cryptic crosswords with [personal profile] shehasathree.

Tech
As you may gather from the previous section of this post, I am having technical difficulties. So it goes.

Crafts
No active progress yet, but the yarn I ordered arrived. This is for weaving with my mother's old knitter's loom which she gave me for my birthday last year.

Actually, no, I'll share the complaints I emitted while trying to decide what yarn to order (huge thanks to Iphys on the Lays server for sorting me out on this.)

cut for length )

Garden
No ripe tomatoes yet, but they're still alive. Raspberry bush looking very sad indeed. Harvested a little bit of parsley and oregano for cooking purposes.

Cats
Didn't enjoy the hot weather last week. Neither did I.

Nature
Hot and windy. (This is an understatement. Last week there was a heatwave and my whole state, as well as those nearest it, was at either "extreme" or "catastrophic" fire danger. I was in one of the "extreme" parts, and unpleasantly aware that on the fire danger scale they use, "catastrophic" is 100 out of 100. Meaning, your area can be at 99 and yet not catastrophic.)

It cooled down after that, but summer is very much not over, and there are places all over the state that are still on fire.

When cats jump up in your lap and start to purr, it's as if all of the problems in our human world dissolve and no longer matter. All that matters is the vibrating feline in our midst, the soft fur on our hands, and the cat-lovers' desire to keep them happy and cozy as long as possible. Flipping a switch in our brains, petting a cat is a cat lover's quickest way to a good mindset, and is seconded only by the most pure forms of feline love projection: Cat memes.

After a long day at work, the best feeling is coming home to your cat. Although they've been basking in the windowsill all day like furry little freeloaders and start meowing for a meal the moment you set foot through the threshold, these little critters have a special talent. As if they are purrfectly designed to boost our moods from zero to hero, kitties tickle our fancy with their too-long whiskers, their flickering tails, and their expressive globe-like eyes. Cats may also have a tendency to be entitled hellion nuggets, but at the same time, their feisty behavior only bolsters our eternal love for them.

A cat can truly do no wrong.

So if you're having a particularly tough week, where your boss is on your back, your bills are piling up, and the food in the fridge is all unappetizing, remember this. You still are remarkably blessed to have a cat in your life, regardless of whether or not it's a friend's feline, your parents' kitty, or your purrfect furbaby. Because when a cat has chosen you and hopped up into your lap, life isn't so bad after all.

Black Ships (Graham)

This book, via [personal profile] selenak, was just very relevant to my interests and I adored it so much! It's one of those books that I didn't really want to end. It's a retelling of the Aeneid from the point of view of the Sybil, with nods towards making it Bronze-Age historically plausible.

Gull begins her life as the daughter of a slave in Pylos, and is apprenticed to the Pythia, the oracle of the Lady of the Dead, becoming Pythia herself when the current Pythia dies. After Troy (here called Wilusa) is sacked for the second time, the black ships of the Wilusan prince Aeneas and the remnants of his people land in Pylos to try to capture back some of their people who had been slaves (including Gull's mother, though by that time she has died). When they depart, Gull/Pythia goes with them as their Sybil on their sea adventures as the People search for a home...

I just really loved so many things about this, starting with that retellings of epic poems are always my jam. I loved Gull/Pythia and the way in which centering her and her experiences centers the lived experience of the women of Wilusa. I loved the way that Aeneas and the Wilusans are portrayed as refugees, because that's what they are. I loved that the gods, while they do appear on the edges, are mysterious beings that may be real and may be wholly belief; and that they aren't toddler-level petty and vindictive like in the Aeneid. I loved how Pythia and Xandros had that sort of fealty-love thing going with Aeneas, uh, not that this is a hardcore thing I love or anything.

Of course I was very curious about how Dido would be portrayed, even without knowing (as Graham says in her afterword) that Carthage didn't... actually... exist during this time period, so that Aeneas & Dido would have to at the very least be revamped. Mild thematic spoilers. )

One of the things that's really interesting here is the through-line of how the world is getting worse, piracy is getting worse, civilization is crumbling. Gull/Pythia can see that all of this is getting worse during her journeys with the black ships, and has gotten worse since the previous Pythia's days. And yet, as the reader knows, and as Pythia comes to dimly see, the arc of civilization since that time will curve upwards, and Aeneas will be part of that. (And I find this a somewhat comforting thought in some ways...)

I'm rather impressed that this was Graham's first book, which I had no idea about until I finished and went looking for more books by her! Occasionally there may have been a tiny bit of unevenness, but it just manages to weave together so many things in a way that I admired so much, and I thought it was extremely strong, much less as a debut! Sooooo now I'm gonna reread Judith Tarr's Lord of the Two Lands to get myself in a proper Alexander mood, and then I shall go on to read Graham's Stealing Fire :D

So I didn’t get the position that I had applied for and I will be working with the person who did get the job.  My annoyances are:
1) not notified that I didn’t get the job (I’m a contractor although the contract is long-term, I haven’t received any complaints so far)
2) person hired has less legal experience than me (at least going by attorney bar number which is an indicator of experience level; if they had hired someone with more legal experience I would be less annoyed; at least person hired has a different technical background which is probably a good match for the job, but I am still concerned that they don’t have enough experience)
3) serious questions about technical decisions being made at high levels
4) serious doubts about the morality and loyalty of the high levels
5) sick and tired of wondering “who goes Nazi” about my coworkers

So I started putting my resume out on LinkedIn and doing the “easy apply” route tonight.  Wish me luck and a better match for my skills, experience, and technical background.

I should also start learning Mandarin, Japanese, and/or Korean as these are going to be the languages of STEM for the 21st century.

I had a dream a few weeks ago about applying for Ph.D programs in chemistry, and saying flat out during the interview when they asked why I was going back at my age, “the only reason I am applying is to get my ticket punched so that I can apply for different legal jobs than I currently can” (patent law specifically will call out the technical background desired in the job description e.g. electrical engineering or biochemistry background).   I woke up before I got a response from the professor interviewing me so I don’t know if that was persuasive or not.

Sometimes, cat lovers like to sit idly by as their cat feasts on their breakfast. It's not because we're jealous of our cat's lackadaisical morning, or because we have nothing better to do, it's because cats are so darn cute when they're crunching their kibbles, we can't resist hanging around for the the show. Like the most adorable ASMR channel online, cats crunching is the cutest phenomenon in the animal kingdom. While they mow down their bowl of food, there's a shadow of their predatory selves as they devour their meal. Meowing for more before the bowl is even empty, these tiny savages grip our hearts and souls with every tasty crunch.

If only we could have the same feeling of satisfied treat enjoyment.

Alas, my fellow feline fanatics, we can! While we may not always have kitty ASMR at our disposal (as we never want to overfeed our beloved floofy boys), there is one thing that we know at the I Can Has Headquarters will fill that hole in your appetite: Cat memes. With every silly feline funny and every goofy cat picture, cat lovers become satiated.

Treat yourself, and keep scrolling for a feisty fix of feline funnies, more crunchy and yummier than your cat's bowl of Friskies.

You never expect a single moment of kindness to change a life, but this tiny kitten's story proves how quickly everything can shift when someone chooses to step in.

A small kitten crossed paths with someone willing to notice her, and that made all the difference. She was tiny, frightened, and clearly didn't belong where she was, but instead of being ignored, she was picked up and protected. Sometimes kindness shows up quietly, in the form of simply saying, "Not this time."

When she got home, there was no debate with the other household memebers. No questions. Just a simple decision to keep her. Having that kind of support changes everything. It turns an emotional moment into a solid one and reminds you that caring isn't something you have to justify. It's something you act on. Knowing someone else stands with you makes compassion feel lighter, not heavier.

This rescue didn't happen on its own. It's part of a bigger picture made up of small, consistent choices. Feeding street cats. Checking on the injured ones. Making room for animals who don't have anyone else looking out for them. It's quiet work that doesn't always get noticed, but it matters. Each small act builds a safer world for animals who depend on it.

Now the kitten is warm, calm, and settling into a place where she's wanted. She's learning what full bowls, soft places, and gentle hands feel like. She doesn't know anything about decisions or moments that could have gone differently. She only knows that she's comfortable and cared for.

1. I am ridiculous and not even managing to keep up with Dreamwidth.

2. Just listened to Bujold's Penric's Demon in audio. Aww!

3. Watching Younger on Netflix, and wow, nothing dates an American show like all of the regular cast members being white. In New York. (Other than that, it's light fun and about what I'm in the mood for. Kind of like an Amy Sherman-Palladino show with less wealth porn.) Also started season 2 of The Pitt, despite intending to rewatch season 1 first.

4. (Burying the lede.) Andrew's surgery went well! We played two games of Scrabble this morning. I'm spending most of my time at the hospital.[a] Halle is confused by his absence and seeking an injunction.

[a] I've spent so long in North American fandoms that I've forgotten when we put "the" in front of "hospital", but I'm pretty sure this is one of those times, it being a specific hospital.

Okay, I have successfully not defaulted on festivids and am trying to shake off the doomscrolling, and now I am going to rescue some drafts and catch up on January Posting! In order because that is simply How My Brain Works.

1. The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

I'm dirty_diana or sweeter_than. I write, draw, and vid, read and watch a lot of tv. I am hoping to get back into using dreamwidth a bit more steadily with this challenge, and also I guess enjoy some transformative fandom community vibes? Since I have been very much on the edges of that recently. Been reading other people's posts and feeling warm and fuzzy about everyone. ❤️

2. Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

I've never had a pet. Allergies. I do have a horrible antisocial roommate and surprise! she has a horrible antisocial cat that hates me for some reason. Pets from canons, hmm, Rivals has this very cute shaggy dog, Gertrude! Played by a cute little doggie actor named Ponti. Also in Rivals is the character of Rocky the horse, I think Rocky is actually a retired showjumper but now he gets to chill and eat grass and get pats. The Rutshire Chronicles series is generally full of animals, but in a very English way where it's all dogs and horses and many of them have jobs, lol.

*

and Talk Meme! still open for questions I can belatedly fill here.

Tell me about a small, nice thing you did for yourself recent(ish)ly? from [personal profile] chase_acow

Do I do enough nice things for myself? Now I'm not sure. I am recently enjoying bulking up my art supply collection, even though frankly I owned enough art supplies to begin with. But I hang out on art tik tok, and to a lesser degree art youtube, and man those people are always showing you cool products. I am trying to not get sucked into the Being a Consumer of it all, but it is also worth it sometimes to not overthink whether you Deserve the fun thing, whether you'll use it enough or with the right skills, etc. I am currently messing around with acrylic paint markers? (Markers and pens are in general great for me because my nemesis chronic fatigue is never going to pull out an entire set of paints.) I did this raspberry lemonade piece for [community profile] doodle4doodle. I will show you all some more acrylic pen art at some point, but if I stop to scan things now this post will never get up, lol.

*

And I should say: for Yuletide I wrote The Heart of the Matter, a Rivals Rupert/Taggie fic. Pining, kissing. And featuring Gertrude and Rocky, in fact.

I got whatever you ask for, that’s what i’ll be by vialethe, also Rivals, Rupert/Taggie. RuTag are adorable in London, topped with a spicy daddy kink garnish.

It was a year where I didn't recognise many fandoms, but this Travelers fic was quite nice? Marcy figures out the holidays. And both the Blood on the Clocktower fics were just the right amount of mysterious and creepy.

That's it for now, the catch up will continue!

Processing.

Challenge #8

Talk about your creative process.

I can sum it up: "Fuck the muse." I don't write when inspiration strikes, I don't wait to get seized with a passion and fury to create and communicate, I don't try to alter my mental state by getting drunk, high, wasted, plastered, or otherwise out of it. I sit down, and I get the words out.

Assuming I'm at home and not traveling, assuming I've gotten my head clear enough, assuming I haven't devoted the evening to something that's going to get me some income, assuming I'm not out of it because of something like a cold or food poisoning - trust me, it was memorably bad tofu - then I'll get my ass in the chair and work. The AIC Method isn't elegant, and it's less about elegance and more about results. The results are 1,000 words when I'm composing. I may write a few more than that one night, meaning that the next night might see me writing a few less to get to the next thousand according to the raw wordcount. The raw wordcount is key at this stage. I don't write out of order as a matter of course; I can't tell myself the story that way. I write it from beginning to end as best I'm able so I can figure out what the story is, so when I go back and edit everything, I can work at getting it to what it needs to be.

I write quietly, without music or background noise. I write at varying speeds, sometimes getting 1,000 words an hour and sometimes averaging out closer to 250. I'll let inspiration arrive at its own pace, and I usually seek out inspiration and passion and ideas when I'm not writing, so I can save up the energy for the work. I write at night, sometimes in the dark and sometimes before sundown depending on the season. I find a lot of pleasure to turning off the overhead light, turning on the desk lap, and sitting in a little bubble of words - I stumbled over it some decades ago, and the only time I've shifted from that was because of one telecommuting job with a set of on-call hours that had me working in the afternoons, which I still look back on as a fairly bizarre time. But it worked for that time frame. Because it was when I got my ass in the chair and wrote the words.

Walks help. Bike rides help. Going to the movies helps. Going to art museums works, too. Reading nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and going to live performances all help feed the creative spirit. But not the muse. I don't want to think about it in those terms. Nights when I don't write always feel a little bereft. I could be at the movies, I could be out with friends, I could be visiting Paris, and as good a time as I'll be having - and trust me, while I haven't done all three at the same time, I've done each of them alone and in varying combinations, so I can say that even doing that, I'll be thinking about what scenes I want to work out and the story I want to tell. I'll sometimes take longhand notes to help get words together so I can figure out if they're the right way to approach an idea, and that helps a bit, but it's not the same as sitting down and writing 1,000 new words, or cleaning up a chapter, or filling in something I set aside to research later to avoid breaking the creative flow, or line-editing according to someone else's patient notes.

I've joked there's only one proper writing method, and that's whatever works for the individual author to get their words out. I've also joked there's only one kind of writer, and that's someone who gets the writing done. I can advocate for what works for me. I can't say it'll work for everyone, but I'm willing to go on record about its success rate at finishing what I start.

Ass In Chair. Learn it. Love it. Live it. Because it always happens one word at a time.

Reading bedtime stories with a cat nearby turns a simple habit into something special. The book comes out, the voice gets softer, and a cat immediately decides this is their moment. They don't sit politely to listen. They sit on the book, sprawl across your lap, or wedge themselves right where the pages need to be. Clearly, story time is a group activity.

Cats have their own literary standards. Dramatic voices are acceptable. Page turning must be slow and approved. Any pause in petting will be addressed with a gentle paw or a pointed stare. The plot itself is optional, but the cuddles are not. This isn't about finishing a chapter, it's about setting the purrfect mood.

Some cats seem deeply invested, eyes half-closed, purring like they're fully absorbed in the tale. Others treat the book like a pillow and drift off before the first paragraph is done. Either way, once a cat settles in, that's it. The story ends when they decide it's time to snooze.

What makes these moments so sweet is the routine. Same spot, same book, same cat slowly melting into comfort. The words fade, the purring takes over, and the night winds down naturally. You may never reach the last page, but that's okay. The real ending is a happy one: a calm moment, a warm lap, and a cat who chose to curl up right there with you.

Sometimes adulthood is going "oh wow for once I don't have anything I need to do once I get off work" and promptly going and doing an errand and then washing dishes and doing laundry once getting home.

Assorted brief notes:

1.
My dojo is doing kyu testing this coming Saturday, which will be delightful. The two people testing are more than ready for these tests. (There's another person who we've been trying to get to test for years and it's just a matter of "please come consistently for a few months and take this test already!" at this point.)

2.
Wednesday evening classes are just. Draining. I do not like needing to be at school from 5pm-8pm. I didn't even when I was in college! Now it's just like "I wake up at 4:30am because of work, why must I suffer like this."

Also next week is going to be very boring because this week was a "oh shit the guest instructor suddenly can't make it" week and so they sort of half-assed an unprepared version of what they were gonna do next week. So. You know. I understood what they were teaching from the half-assed version, the teachers know that, but since most of the cohort was like ???, next week will be them going step-by-step through it with more prep. Which will be useful, and is good pedagogy, but is also going to Bore Me.

3.
h/t to [personal profile] trobadora for talking about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which mostly got me going back to Star Trek: Discovery, since Academy is set after Disco.

which means I am currently re-watching the first episode of s3, because I watched the first two episodes when they first aired and then fell off because... idk, it was Oct/Nov 2020 and I was running headfirst into QZGS and infinite flow cnovels...? But hey, Disco is a fun show, I'm so fond of Michael Burnham, and s3 is in some ways a soft reboot due to being right after the timeskip, so! Looking forward to actually getting to know the future timeline.

I do think that a huge amount of why I fell off is just... 2020 being 2020. Because I don't think I had nearly as much fun with this the first time I watched it, and now I'm just like "wow this is such good tropey fun, s3e1 is using so much good trope stuff to set up Michael/Book".

4.
god I feel like I had some other things. hm.

A podcast reminded me that Escaflowne exists, and that it's an anime that I probably would have been obsessed with as a teenager if I'd seen it then. Mecha and guys with wings. Normal things. xD I feel like it should be on crunchyroll but it's not? Alas. Probably for the best if I'm going to actually watch Star Trek right now, but I do want to at some point experience this show.

5.
Work is very nonsense.

...I think I was going to give examples, but, idk. just. nah. it's! a lot! and mostly not outright bad, just tiring, and takes too much time, as work does.

3... 2... 1... Cat!

Do you ever feel like something was made for you? Like fate purrectly concocted and contrived the best possible thing for you? Maybe you felt it when you met the love of your life, you were down on your luck and then one reluctant agreement to hang out with friends that night turned into your furrever. Maybe it happened with work, and you never thought you'd have the offers and opportunities you have. Maybe it happened with something else, and maybe it happened with these cat memes.

Fate is the notion that some moments are meant to find us, no matter how winding the path that leads there. It lives in the liminal spaces between coincidence and intention, between serendipity and curiosity, where chance and meaning collide. To believe in fate is to sense that certain meetings, losses, and transformations are not random, but part of a larger, unseen pattern unfolding beyond our immediate understanding. The feeling that something is fated doesn't always occur in the moment it happens; it may be years of hindsight to make you realize the purrfect timing you experienced. A decision that once felt small reveals its weight years later. A missed opportunity becomes the reason a greater one could exist. We look back and recognize the invisible thread that tied moments together long before we understood their significance. Fate does not shout; it whispers, allowing us the freedom to choose while quietly shaping the terrain beneath our steps.

There is comfort in this idea. Fate suggests that even in uncertainty, life carries a direction. It allows us to trust that meaning can arise from chaos, that detours are not failures but necessary turns. In moments of loss or confusion, fate offers the possibility that something is still aligning, even when clarity feels distant.

At the same time, fate does not erase responsibility or agency. It coexists with choice, inviting us to participate in our own becoming. Perhaps fate sets the stage, and we decide how the story unfolds upon it. In this way, fate is less a rigid script and more a conversation between what is given and what is chosen.
