Sometimes my rats almost give a heart attack. See, I let them out earlier, and I saw a Emil going to explore a corner I couldn't see very well, but I mostly paid attention to reading something on my screen. Then a bit later I noticed that I only saw Krümel and Ignatz still running around, got up to check said corner where I saw Emil last and noticed to my dismay that the cardboard I used to block the small gap between a closed shelf and the wall was pried off. And that gap is barely large enough that a young rat's head can fit through, so theoretically they could squeeze themselves in there, though they wouldn't be able to really maneuver well.
So I already had nightmare visions of having to dismantle my furniture to free stupid rats stuck in impossible places (my first rat once got stuck behind a wall unit when it somehow squeezed itself behind it), and went to collect the other two before trying to locate Emil (I only made the mistake looking for one vanished rat while not securing the others first once), when to my great relief it turned out he just had hid beneath the well accessible shelf (one where I can just reach under with my arm and rats have no problem to fit) after all, and had refrained from investigating that enticing gap he'd pried open (which is now blocked again more securely). But still. On the bright side, nothing like a burst of adrenaline to really wake you up.
