Ran across this one this morning...

" 1. Memory by Lois McMaster Bujold
Cover of 'Memory' by Lois McMaster Bujold

In this captivating science fiction novel, a young woman named Dag is tasked with the responsibility of restoring the lost memories of a society that has been stripped of its past. As she delves into the secrets of memory manipulation, she uncovers a shocking conspiracy that threatens to unravel the very fabric of her world. With her determination and resilience, Dag must navigate through a web of deceit and danger to uncover the truth and save her people from a future devoid of their collective memories."

For the love of mike, people, don't trust AI for anything. Though I suppose most readers of this blog know that by now.

I mean, it's horribly hilarious, but I suspect other AIs will grep this very post, and dismember and replicate its contents all over the internet in a feedback loop of lunacy. Sort of like an ignorance virus.

Sigh, L.

After *mumble* hours on the WaybackMachine last night, I think I've determined the vidders for all except the Parody Intro.

They seems to be by vidders involved with the CreatiVentures, CreatiVideos, and T 4 Productions digital vidding collectives - specifically Theresa (aka T), Todd Allen, Jamester, and Angie.

(Lunacy Reviews lists Matt Savelkoul as one of the vidders for vid number 18, but I'm a bit dubious of that since the website also lists him for certain vids when the vidder's collective websites for those vids do not.)

As far as I can tell from their archived websites:

CreatiVentures = Angie, Jamester, T, and Todd Allen
CreatiVideos = Jamester & Todd Allen
T 4 Productions = Angie, Cat, Elena, and T (and later Dave)

I think it’s time for more of my favorite Seussian Sweets! (WOOT!)

Most Seuss cakes tend to feature a certain cat in a certain hat, but after The Lorax hit theaters we got to see some fun new designs:

By Gabrielle of GoBoulay cakes

And check out the perfect Truffula Tree cupcakes Gabrielle made to go with it!

Look at the perfect twisty trunk! And that icing texture for the tree top? Brilliant.

And this Lorax is begging to come live with me, I just know it:

Sub'd by  Noemi R., made by Inticing Creations

Cute story: Noemi and her friends first brought out a decoy wreck to prank the birthday girl. Ha! So, Amy ended up with a wreck AND a Sweet? Dude, that's MY kind of prank!

It's not often that I praise the use of an airbrush on cake, you guys, so brace yourselves:

By Cut the Cake

Now THAT is some awesome airbrushing. There, I said it. It didn't even hurt! (Much.) And I love how the parents' names are listed as the authors! (Did I mention this is a baby shower cake? No? Oops. Um...This is a baby shower cake.)

What's that? You want a jaw-dropping mini diorama of perfectly iced cookies to go with that cake?

Well, gee, you don't ask for much, do you? [<--SARCASM]

Luckily I happen to have a little something here that fits the bill:

By Jen Whitlock of Posh Pastries

My jaw, it has dropped. The balloons! The elephant! The marshmallow packing peanuts!! What a clever twist on the cookie bouquet!

Well, I think it's high time for a certain cat's hat to make an appearance:

By Custom Cake Designs

I just noticed the cupcake is balancing on the fish's tail! Ha! Love it.

And now, two of everyone's favorite Things:

Via Twinkies630 and made by The Dessert Cart

Wow, these guys break EVERYTHING - including the laws of gravity. [bah-dum-CHA!]

Let's take a closer look:

D'awwww, so sweet! And I'll never get tired of that Seussian line shading, like on the ladder and bow. It just makes the leap from 2D to 3D so beautifully.

Ever wonder what flavor of cake you'd use for green eggs and ham?

By Bird's Nest Bakery

I have. I'm thinking pear cake with cinnamon buttercream -  but only because Noemi up there mentioned that's what her Lorax cake was, and now I reeeeally want to try it. I'd also like to take a huge chomp out of that fork handle, because it looks like a giant Tootsie Roll. And maybe I'm a little hungry. (WHAT.)

Hang on, we haven't actually seen The Cat in the Hat yet, have we?

No problem-o, I can fix that:

By Ashley Gay

More perfect cookies! Lemme tell you guys, I could stare at cookies like this all day. The pillowy poofiness of that icing is just sooo cool - and I kind of want to pet it. Is that weird? Yes? Then I mean, uh, I want to LICK it. There. All better.

I was about to confess that I haven't seen or read The Lorax, but I think I can bluff my way through this next one Ok. Here goes...

By Three Little Blackbirds

WOW THIS IS AN AWESOME LORAX CAKE.

My favorite parts are the little pulley and those shingles. They look kind of like caramels, right? MMMM.

I think we need some more colorful counting fish in here:

By Cakebox Special Occasion Cakes

This is such a great theme for a baby shower! And get this: those "ribbons" wrapping the cake are actually hand-crafted fondant and icing. WOW.

Oooh, and here come the Sneetches!

By Fondant Flinger

Topsy-turvy cakes were just MADE for Seuss themes. Also, "Fondant Flinger" is the name of my Cake cover band. (BWAHAHAAHA!!)(That was only funny to me, wasn't it?)

Well, let's wrap up this delightful romp with a Sweet combination of all of Dr. Seuss' most popular creations:

Submitted by Kel D., made by Delicious Desserts

I even spy the Grinch in there!

Happy Sunday!

*****

P.S. If you work with kids or kids at heart, these make great prizes or party favors:

Dr. Seuss Mini Memo Pads, 48 pk

The 48-pack has 6 different designs, comes in this cute display, and costs under $18. This would be especially cute for teachers!

I lost most of this week to an atmospheric-pressure headache, the usual “not bad enough to put off things I have to do (like meet deadlines) but bad enough that I can’t enjoy doing things I want to do,” ugh. Still, if it’s the worst health problem I have in middle age I should be relieved, knock wood. (I went to the doctor for an MRI a few years back and they said “oh, your brain is fine, your neck is just fucked up, sorry about that.”) Catching up now, and grateful for everyday things.

Instead of a Jiang Dunhao song this time around, here’s one by one of his brothers: Li Hao’s I should be with you is absolutely haunting for me, in all senses, the chorus just gets me where I live. Also, listen to this song without checking the singer names and tell me whether you think you’re hearing two women, two men, a man and a woman, or what?

Still reading The People at No. 1 Siwei St.; there are definitely lesbians, along with non-Taipei regionalisms (the characters come from Taichung and Tainan and Chiayi and Taitung) and delicious-sounding food and a grad student who writes BL novels in her spare time, and it’s a lot of fun. Maybe I will just go ahead and translate it (from the Japanese version, until I can get my hands on the original) for my own amusement? It’s a quick read, except for figuring out all the Taiwanese food names.

Elen and I have been watching season 2 of Under the Skin--about halfway through, or maybe two thirds?—and it’s very enjoyable, although maybe that’s not the word I want; it’s quite brutal, a chronicle of all the ways society finds to victimize women (and sometimes other vulnerable people, but especially women). But not completely bleak, at least not so far (we’ve counted at least two stealth-lesbian couples up to this point, both with tentatively happy endings, the scene with the wedding cake was one of the best things I’ve watched in ages). It is often stunning to look at, not that I know anything about cinematography whatsoever, and thoroughly, thoughtfully characterized down to (or especially) the one-off roles, a gold-mine of gifted middle-aged character actors of both sexes. I like Shen Yi and Du Cheng, but am not as gripped by them as I was in s1; Shen Yi as the all-knowing psychologist doesn’t really work for me, and the rest of the time he needs the services of one himself, the man has no common sense/self-preservation to the point where it’s just frustrating. (Having also encountered Shen Wei and Wu Xie along the line, I would now really like to watch a drama where the main character does have common sense and acts accordingly, i.e. throwing yourself into stupid danger is not required to move along the plot! Any recs?) My favorite regular characters remain Zhang-ju (competent older woman in a position of authority who has retained her sense of humor and looks very good in a uniform—and now we know her first name!) and Jiang Feng (straightforward loyal floppy-eared puppy). Also I was delighted that Lu Haizhou, my very favorite character from s1, showed up again briefly in s2 and was still very very Lu Haizhou—fair, stern, unemotional, and not unwilling to make enemies in the course of his duty, but also prepared to flirt outrageously with more than one of his male colleagues likewise. (Somebody please give Zhang Tao bigger roles? He still reminds me of a younger Wang Yang, and should be able to follow in his footsteps.)

Reading A Winter’s Tale with yaaurens and company; among other roles I was assigned the unspectacular-sounding Second Gentleman, who has this wonderful line: “Nothing but bonfires: the oracle is fulfilled; the king's daughter is found: such a deal of wonder is broken out within this hour that ballad-makers cannot be able to express it.”

In cooking news, I recently invented a new and sinful form of TKG. Tamago kake gohan is a Japanese diner standard of raw egg served over hot rice with soy sauce; unfortunately I won’t eat raw eggs (they’re safe to eat here, I just can’t stand the texture), so instead I started by chopping up some garlic and sautéing it in sesame oil until browned and sweet. Then I broke a couple of eggs into the saucepan and let the egg whites fold in the garlic, until the eggs were sunny-side-up with hard whites, soft yolks, and very crispy, garlic-studded bottoms and edges. Eaten over rice with a dash of soy sauce, delicious.

Sometimes I wonder why Brahms’ contemporaries/fellow composers didn’t just go “okay, forget it, I’m going off to sell insurance or run a sheep farm” or something. Listen to the quintet here, my God, it’s doing so much. (Okay, among Brahms’ contemporaries was Wagner, who wouldn’t have run out of musical confidence if God Himself came down and said “Richard, you’re not getting it,” but still.)

Photos: Lots of plum blossoms, some citrus, and some winter daphne (I have to look up the English name every time), which is boring to look at but has a lovely fragrance you’ll just have to imagine.

Be safe and well.

It's Sunday, and I seem to have lost an hour somewhere around here. I forgot about daylight savings, so I was all proud of myself for sleeping in. Then [personal profile] dine reminded me in her post, and I was like "Well fuck." I did not sleep in, not really.

Yesterday was a busy, but fun day. I worked in the morning, which was boring as shit. I was on admin, which means doing the faxes and emails, but we hardly ever get any on the weekend. I think I did maybe 10? They take about three minutes each, so I had plenty of free time. In between, I filled some cardiac slots and generally putzed around. Finally, it was noon and I was free!

Half an hour later, it was time to play Arvandor. The players took on the Lord of Blood, and defeated him after some dicey moments. It was a good battle. I dropped that last little secret, and it was wonderful. And then, the campaign was over. I did my epilogue, which turned really well. It felt like a fitting send off to three years of my life. Now, I need to buckle down and finish writing the next campaign, and source maps, and make character sheets. It's a lot, but I think we'll probably do a few one shots, and then we'll probably start after we get back from vacation. Sooner if I can do it, but that's quite a bit to do in one or two months. I was very emotional about the game ending, both elated that it had gone well and sad to say good bye to these characters. I think I'm going to have to sit with it a while for it to really hit home. Right now, I'm at the stage where I'm just so grateful that my friends put their trust in me and allowed themselves to be vulnerable and to really buy into this little world that we created. They made me excited to DM for them each and every game, and they helped me breathe life into a world that existed until then in my head. That's such a gift.

It might seem like D&D is a kind of silly frivolous game. People talking, sometimes in silly voices, rolling dice and talking about casting spells on beings with names like Ragnar, Lord of Blood. And yeah, it is. But when you look a little bit deeper, at it's core, it's people making connections and telling a shared story, letting your characters have agency, in a world with solveable problems. And that's powerful.

Then it was off to dinner with L, who was my lone friend from 911. We went to Michael's Steak and Lobster house, and I had my usual steak with imperial crab. It was SO good. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and it was nice to see L again. She had the stomach bug recently, and this was kind of her first big meal, so I hope it settled.

I've been looking at San Francisco and it looks like there's plenty of things that we can do while we're there. We're going to get in way early for check in, so we're probably going to leave our bags at the hotel and explore. Maybe start with Alcatraz and go from there. I know I want to see Muir Woods and the redwoods and I definitely want to eat in Chinatown. I need to reasearch some of the Chinese restaurants around there and see where we want to go. We'll have most of Friday and all of Saturday, then on Sunday, we'll be winging our way off to Oahu.

We have so many things to look forward to! We're going to have so much fun. Next up, in April, I start school, and then after that, we go to NYC for the Lost Boys musical. Then, May is Alaska, then back to NYC in June for the Rocky Horror, and then to Hershey to see Weird Al in July.

I'm looking forward to all of them, and I think we're going to have an amazing summer.

Today, I need to go to the pharmacy for all my medication, and then the rest of the day is for resting, and eating a pile of Dungeness crabs. I'm looking forward to that.

I was talking with my sister last night, and they're looking at going on vacation in August of next year, up to Maine. They've been before and loved it, so I hope they have an amazing time again.

I'm not quite ready to repeat my vacations, though I would like to take Jess up to Boston and Salem at some point. Who knows, maybe that'll change. I might fall in love with Alaska or Hawaii, and want to go back, but right now, I'm doing a Jack Sparrow. "Now bring me that horizon."

Tomorrow, it's back to work, with a borked sleep schedule. That should be fun. I always hate springing forward and falling back. The cat does not understand this bullshit, and it's weeks before she stops trying to get me up at random times. Tomorrow, we will also be back to our normal schedule, of having an hour or so to relax in the morning and write my little journal before my sister gets up and talks to me.

Okay, time to go forth and get myself moving. If I'm going to the pharmacy, I'm definitely going to need pants. Everyone have a stupendous Sunday!

Summary: “Wei Ying!” Lan Wangji gasped, rushing forward.
Wei Ying was lying face down on the ground, an arrow protruding from his shoulder and blood staining the robes on his left side. At first glance it looked like he wasn’t moving at all, only the grey wisps of resentment still swirling around him, but as Lan Wangji knelt down he saw that he had been wrong. Wei Ying was shivering violently, his whole body a shudder. He made no sound besides his harsh breathing.
“Wei Ying,” Lan Wangji said again, gently touching Wei Ying’s back. No response.
“Fuck, what happened here?” Jiang Wanyin said, kneeling down on Wei Ying’s other side. “An ambush?”
--
As the Sunshot Campaign is drawing nearer to Nightless City, Wei Wuxian gets ambushed by an assassin and falls gravely ill. The doctors cannot help him, but Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji refuse to give up.
There must be a way to save Wei Wuxian.

12 games into our 20-game season, Kodiaks 2 finally notched up a win! We beat Lee Valley Vampires 1-0 last night. That single goal was scored with about ten minutes to go, and it was a long ten minutes, and especially a long last minute on the bench after my final shift, waiting to see if we'd do it. I was literally crying in the post-game huddle and handshake line. This team, this team that we dragged into existence in the face of multiple obstacles, this amazing bunch of women. We won, we won, we won.

[community profile] no_true_pair's 2026 Four-Character Mini-Challenge is open for sign-ups!

[community profile] no_true_pair is, loosely, a mad-libs-style challenge. You sign up with a list of characters, a set of prompts is posted that uses all the characters in different combinations, and you create works using those characters and prompts.

For example, if your list contained Darth Vader and Mickey Mouse as numbers 2 and 4, there could be a prompt like "2 & 4 go out for coffee" or "4 invites 2 out for dinner, except..." and you'd write Darth Vader and Mickey Mouse going out for coffee, or Mickey Mouse inviting Darth Vader out for dinner and then going from there.

1. Leave a comment with your numbered list of four characters.

As per previous rounds:

• your list can contain characters from one fandom or different fandoms
• you may use your original characters
• you may have more than one list (as many as you like)
• every character in your list will have a prompt with every other one

2. This is a low-pressure challenge. Signing up does not obligate you to create anything.

3. Tell your friends and have fun!

4. If you have any questions, just ask!

5. The Schedule:
Signups Open - NOW!
Prompts Posted ~ March 16th
Posting - March 26th-31st
Amnesty - Thereafter

(Amnesty is currently paused until the end of this round.)

Long-haulers! We have four recipients who still need pinch hitters to claim their requests. Please help if you can!

If you can't claim a pinch hit yourself, please share our call for pinch hitters with any relevant communities you may be part of.

To everyone: Whether or not you can help with the remaining pinch hits, please help make reveals go smoothly by doing the following things:
  • Check your recipient's Do-Not-Wants. Yes, this could be an awkward time to discover a point of conflict or ambiguity, but better now than on reveals. I am still happy to pass on questions to recipients.

  • Check that the version you uploaded is the version you intended to upload. Please make sure your work is checked over for spelling, grammar, coherence, and polish. Betas are not mandatory in this exchange. A minimum standard of presentation is mandatory. So if you know you're not the best at picking out your own typos, tense switches, or when you've drawn impossible anatomy, please seek feedback. (See beta post)

  • Consider when you will be able to comment on your gift. You may have had original plans that were scuppered by schedule delays - I'm sorry about that. If all goes well, the anonymous period of the exchange will be between 21 March and 4 April. Please try to comment within that period; if that's not possible, please try to comment soon after. You are also very welcome to comment on other works as soon as reveals happen.

  • Check that your work is set to allow comments. You don't have to enable guest comments, but please ensure your recipient can comment on your work, at least during the anon period. If this is a problem, please discuss it with me at mod.modzilla@gmail.com

If you feel like earning Extra Exchange Bonus Points, more beta volunteers are always welcome. And you might not have time to consume a canon to fulfil a pinch hit, but if a requested canon has caught your eye, why not try picking it up for a future exchange?

Treats are also welcome for all prompts! Treats can be as short as you like. If any pinch hitters choose to leave prompts, you can find them here.

For her eightieth birthday observed, we celebrated my mother with a three-tier almond cake layered with marzipan icing and raspberry and rose hip preserves, frosted in rose-toned whipped cream, and decorated with pâtes de fruits into the central one of which was socketed the candle to grow on. It looked like a charlotte russe from the Geometric period in slices. We gave her books, cards, balloons, a banner of cats, a pendant like a bronze-pronged sun of creamy golden sapphire on a leather cord. My niece ran around all day with the twins. I am not ready for Daylight Saving Time. I have enough trouble with the regular kind.
