ratcreature: RatCreature as Wolverine: Snikt. (wolverine)
I wanted to do this for the Secret Mutant Madness fest, when I saw Yehram's prompt "Logan gets turned into a fluffy wolverine (the animal) and Charles has to keep Logan out of shenanigans." but didn't get around to it before Christmas. So now I decided to just doodle it belatedly.

Characters/Pairings: Charles Xavier, Raven
Media used: indian ink and acrylics on paper, minor digital correction with GIMP (original is ca. 25x17cm)

Notes/comments: This is the gift I made for Papercutperfect for the [livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant exchange. Papercutperfect requested a slice of Charles' and Raven's life as children, growing up together in Westchester. I imagined that Charles would introduce Raven to making Christmas cookies.

Please do not distribute my art without my permission, i.e. do not upload my art to other sites, services, archives, or wikis. That includes uploading the images themselves to your own Tumblr, even with credit.

ratcreature: RatCreature as Erik Lehnsherr (erik lehnsherr)
One of my prompts asked for an XMFC take on Erik's and Magda's backstory. The story I was gifted takes elements from the comics and merges them into XMFC. As you can guess from the subject matter, it is not a fluffy story (and you should heed the warning for graphic violence), but it ends at a somewhat hopeful point in the string of tragedies in Erik's life.

So go and read: Geheimnisträger (12476 words, Erik/Magda) by Anonymous

(and despite the German word as title, it has no gratuitous German dialog to trip over <3!)

Unrelated, I let my extra icon package on LJ expire, because I've bee using it much less often, so like with IJ you might miss some of my icons from now on if you follow my LJ-crossposts rather than the DW posts.
ratcreature: RatCreature is dead by anvil. (dead)
It's five in the morning, but I'm done now (in every sense of the word). With the deadline being tomorrow night, I could have even taken a break and gone to bed at a slightly more reasonable hour, but I was afraid that if I stopped in the middle of coloring it, it would have been even more stressful, and I'd just have fretted even more. Now I only have to think of a title and post it for the exchange on AO3.

I'm not entirely happy with how it turned out, but I am glad that I won't end up defaulting after all. And in managing to do two exchanges, I made more art recently than in all the rest of the year, which was nearly completely lacking in art production.
ratcreature: Procrastination is a Lifestyle. RatCreature in a hammock doing nothing. (procrastination)
It turns out my initial idea was somewhat overly ambitious. I mean, I really liked that concept (though my mental image was still vague, which always helps to be more fond of the potential art, because you haven't yet failed at the realization) , and I played around with it for a while looking up references and such, but I was getting more and more anxious about the approaching deadline and I wouldn't have been able to finish it in time and do it justice.

So today I decided to switch to another of my recipient's prompts which will allow me to do something simpler. For that I have now finished the rough, preliminary pencils, though I will need to work on the faces still, and add some more detail, but it's progress at least, which is more than I could have said for the days I spent with the previous idea, which mainly consisted of me pondering stuff for AU worldbuilding for the scene and looking at historical pictures, but never getting anywhere. With my second attempt I already have something concrete, and it will be a happy little picture, that I hope I will be realistically able to finish until the Sunday deadline. *crosses fingers*

The minimum word count for fic in the exchange is only 1000 words, so I don't feel that bad to abandon the ambitious idea.

I also still have to decide how I'll solve the anonymity problem with the image hosting. Secret Mutant runs on AO3 this year, so if when (optimism!) I finish, I'll need to embed the picture there but upload it elsewhere, because AO3 still hasn't gotten around to hosting images natively. Both LJ and my webspace would wreck anonymity because they contain my username in the URL. When I asked the mods about this earlier (initially the FAQ didn't address that problem) they recommended imgur, but with that kind of service that doesn't need an account you then also can't control the image afterwards, and I'd like to be able to replace the unsigned with a signed version once the anon period is over. As last resort I can mail the picture to the mods and they upload it to the mods' scrapbook, and then email the URL back, but I'm not sure how long before the deadline I'd need to do that.

Of the four prompts of my recipient I could do two, however I tend towards the Charles/Erik prompt. Only I'm not sure what the most plausible backstory would have to be, to achieve the prompt. I mean, I'm doing a drawing, but I need to know what I imagine I'm illustrating, if that makes sense.

Would anyone be interested to help me brainstorm a bit via email to work through my problem? This being an anon gift exchange I don't want to discuss it directly in my journal, even with a lock.

ratcreature: Flail! (flail)
I made the last minute decision to sign up for [livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant after all. So now I'm committed to two exchanges. *gulp*

But I got my assignment for [community profile] yuletart where you could pick prompts, and while I didn't get my favorite for a match, I think it is very doable and I have an idea how draw the prompt (my first two preferences weren't the first preferences the recipients wanted to get, whereas the one I got assigned was the first the recipient wanted, so I get why I was matched there).

And if I successfully manage to make these two pieces, my art output this year won't be quite so abysmal.

I am a bit worried about [livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant because it is a mixed exchange, and in these the problem is always that many just don't think about art when prompting or giving extra info in exchange letters. I mean, I browsed the couple of letters people have already posted (I still need to post mine, I only just signed up), and three of the four only have sentences how they look forward to what people *write* or start with thanks for *writing* something, so if I got matched to someone like that, it would make me feel somewhat neurotic, that they'll just resent that they got matched with someone for art rather than getting a story and will not be happy with my gift no matter what.
ratcreature: RatCreature is conflicted, and ponders under the influence of hovering angel- and devil-RatCreatures. (conflicted)
I'm wondering whether I should sign up for [livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant this year. It'll have quite a tight schedule, with just five weeks between getting the assignment and its due date, and I already signed up for [community profile] yuletart, which also gives about five weeks, though that'll be due about two weeks earlier. So they don't overlap completely. OTOH, I've not been productive art-wise at all recently, so I'm not sure I ought to sign up for multiple things. On the third hand I usually do manage to produce art with the pressure of an exchange, and I would get a fanwork too.

ratcreature: RatCreature does the Snoopy Dance. (snoopydance)
I got a Steampunk AU story that included so many of my favorite things: atmospheric descriptions and hints of background story and worldbuilding, both Erik and Charles using their powers, with Erik being all competent while stealing a dirigible, plus Charles/Erik sex that works for my mindcontrol kink. (And the unfortunate typo in "canon" in the header is not indicative at all of the spelling competence of story, so do not let that deter you.)

So go read: The Case of the Missing Dirigible, or a Romance of Chance Meetings

...that I finished the picture for [livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant and with a few days to spare (deadline is the 22nd), however now I have to think of a title to fill out the submission template. When not forced by templates, I don't title my artworks, precisely because I can never think of anything. Argh.

I need opinions on an art choice for my [livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant piece, that would be revealing if I posted it publicly in the post. So if you don't participate in that exchange, are online more or less now when this is posted, and are willing to get a PM and answer a quick question right now (no art or X-Men knowledge required) to help me decide something, could you comment here?
