ratcreature: RatCreature as Sarah Connor (sarah connor)
The Upload by [personal profile] seekingferret is awesome. I love vids that tell a narrative story with a plot, rather than "just" an emotional one, especially AU ones like this. The summary is "John Connor uploads into a metal body and sends herself back in time to protect Sarah Connor. This does not always go as expected." and the creator has really interesting additional thoughts about the vid and the creative process in the post too (also, heed the imagery warnings).

This Rivers of London vid posted in [community profile] festivids is beautifully fancast and constructed. If I didn't know otherwise, I would assume that there was a Rivers of London tv adaptation the vidder had as source.

vid recs?

ratcreature: RatCreature begs: Please? (please?)
I don't watch a lot of vids, and as a result I never even know how to effectively look for some in the instances when I want to watch some new ones.

I'm in the mood for visually fast paced vids, not necessarily action vids, though I do like those a lot, however generally I'm not that fond of vids meant for dancing or vids to dance music. Also, while I enjoy humor as much as anyone, the vids I love most are more on the drama or even angsty side of things, with a bit of pathos even. Just right now not slow pathos, but fast.

Compared to fic I really lack the analytic skill and vocabulary to describe what I'm looking for... :( But an example for the kind of vid I mean would be [livejournal.com profile] barkley's Numb3rs vid Reach For the Sky.

Have you watched any vids like that recently? (Or not so recently, I really watch very few.) The fandoms I'd most appreciate for this would be MCU, Star Wars, Star Trek, XMFC, Pacific Rim or even Check Please, since I recently learned from [personal profile] dine's rec of this cool, if short vid by helorific that fans vid in that fandom as well.

AU recs

ratcreature: RatCreature smokes Crack (crack)
DCU

Shards of Night, by Marcelo. Het, Lois/Clark. (ca. 830 words)
Clark in this story is more alien than in canon. The story is on the scary side, but I actually felt sorry for Clark, because he's still one of the good guys.

The Call, by Marcelo. Gen, Bruce Wayne. (ca. 450 words)
Another short, yet scary DC AU. The author describes it as "DC Comics meets Lovecraft" and I really like the creepy premise for Batman here.

Supernatural

Dromoscope, by Emily Brunson. Gen, Dean Winchester. WIP
It's a fusion with the novel "Jumper". I haven't read that, but still enjoyed the story so far. The premise is that Dean is able to teleport, and keeps this secret from his family.

The Heist, by Starrylizard. Gen.
This last one isn't a fic rec, but an AU vid. It is really fun though. Sam and Dean are bankrobbers.

First, since [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine was encouraging vid recs recently, I'd like to point out that [livejournal.com profile] lim's vid for the [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic mission report challenge is great. It's the first time I've seen a vid where someone wrote a song telling the story and then sung it illustrated by a vid. Admittedly I haven't watched that many vids, so this could be totally common, but even then it would still be awesome. I just really like vids where the narrative isn't that opaque, I guess.

Also take a look at [livejournal.com profile] brown_betty's DC comics vid You Gotta Have Boobs, which is hilarious.

Then there was this week's SGA episode 3x07 Common Ground... )

SGA rec

ratcreature: RatCreature is enthusiastic: Yay! (yay!)
I really enjoyed the quantum mirror But trailing clouds of glory, do we come that's been posted recently on [livejournal.com profile] stargateanon. It's listed as Sheppard/McKay slash, but relationship stuff doesn't actually feature that prominently. It's overall much more like an action-adventure story, so you might enjoy it even if you're not into that pairing. I found it was an interesting choice that the story doesn't feature the canon universe, too.

I always waffle whether the alternate realities that are attained via a canon compliant plot device actually count as an AU or not. In any case I'm going to wait until the author's revealed before putting it on my AU recs page, so I might as well point it out here earlier.

Also I guess you have probably watched [livejournal.com profile] newkidfan's Sheppard/McKay vid Dreams already, but if not you should give it a try. I appreciated that it's a vid where for once even I could follow the narrative. I guess that it has text helps. *grin*
