ratcreature: RatCreature as Harry Dresden. (dresdenfiles)
My copy of Skin Game arrived earlier than expected! That's some consolation for me still having to wait a few days to watch the new X-Men (because there are not that many non-dubbed showings to begin with here, and I decided to go with my brother).

Notes/comments: I wanted to try digital inking via letting the program draw paths you define, rather than direct inking by tablet, but wow, that is one tedious inking method. Maybe the most tedious inking method. Perhaps I've been doing it wrong. It took hours to ink this measly doodle when by hand it wouldn't have taken thirty minutes. Even direct tablet inking (at which I'm slower than on paper) wouldn't have taken this long. It didn't help that I did the sketch digitally too, at which I'm much slower than on paper. Granted, the lines look very clean, suffering none of the wobbly suck my digital tablet inking has, but still. It would probably look better colored, but my wrist hurts from clicking and dragging too many stupid path nodes. Maybe I'll come back to it.

Please do not distribute my art without my permission, i.e. do not upload my art to other sites, services, archives, or wikis. That includes "reblogging" the images themselves on services such as Tumblr.

A little while ago I lamented the lack of Harry/Ramirez slash. So today my morning was much improved when I saw [livejournal.com profile] cccarioca's story Flower Child (ca. 3,065 words, some spoilers for White Night) appear on my f-list. Beyond just being awesome for the pairing, it comes with cool fantasy stuff, like curses and Aztec goddesses.
ratcreature: reading RatCreature (reading)
After spending quite some time today looking for fanfic that I'd expected to be common but for some reason it isn't, I realized that semi-regularly I look for certain kinds of fanfic that I really expect to find, yet somehow it doesn't exist at all or in much smaller numbers than I'd anticipated from the size of the fandom.

I don't mean that obscure story you yearn to read, but that is somewhat "out there", like for example the SGA/Watership Down fusion I wish someone would write, with the SGA characters as space-exploring rabbits (though, honestly, it makes sense and the two would go great together as I explain in the notes for my fanart for such a universe, so I don't really think it would be that weird a fusion, but I can see why it hasn't yet become a genre. Though it should!), or specific fanfic in small fandoms, like say Spider-Man/Daredevil slash (though when I looked for that today I actually found some I had missed, yay!), but genres, pairings or plots you honestly expected to find.

Then I wondered whether other people have these kinds of lists of fanfic they're searching for periodically. For example every once in a while I look for these:
  • CSI: Lady Heather/Gil Grissom D/s fic with Gil as Lady Heather's sub. I don't care whether it were angsty epics or PWPs or whatever, but for some reason almost nobody seems to write this pairing and even fewer with Gil as sub. I realize that het femdom D/s seems less popular than say D/s slash overall, but here's a popular character who's been at least briefly involved with a dominatrix in canon, yet it's hard to find kinky fic for them. I don't get it.
  • CSI: AUs in which Grissom is deaf, either becoming deaf after his surgery failed or having been deaf all along in the AU. I've seen a few such stories, but nowhere near as many as I expected.
  • Dark Angel: longish fic featuring Max with Logan and/or Alec, without any character bashing happening, and preferably with some Manticore-related plot, but really most important is the absence of character bashing. It shouldn't be hard to find this, but it is.
  • Dresden Files: Harry/Ramirez buddy slash, or even just gen friendship stories focusing on these two. Okay, maybe that falls just under the "small fandom" explanation (and is a recent addition to my list), but seriously, there's is some Dresden Files fic, even for the bookverse, so I expected to find at least a few stories with Ramirez.
ratcreature: RatCreature begs: Please? (please?)
Now that I've finished reading White Night, I think there really should be Harry/Ramirez buddy slash because spoilers for White Night )

Please tell me there's people writing that pairing somewhere? I have to say as much as I like Bob, I really find the idea of Harry/Ramirez far more attractive than Harry with an incorporeal spirit (or a skull, I guess).
ratcreature: RatCreature is thinking: hmm...? (hmm...?)
I'm toying with the idea to illustrate chapter 33 of Dead Beat, and I think I might try something a bit comic like in that I first to a couple of close-ups of details (maybe in extra panels maybe not) and then pull the camera back for the main scene. I think it would be nice to do a bit of graphic narrative again.

I have however questions about some of the stuff appearing the scene. What I'm thinking of is cut for spoilers of the chapter--what is the common spoiler policy for books that came out a while ago anyway? )

Also, happy May Day!
ratcreature: navel-gazing RatCreature (navel-gazing)
In my previous post a couple of commenters said that they find commentary on the process for art and fic interesting, and don't mind the creator expressing their "these things suck in my work" lists as part of that as long as that isn't all they talk about.

So in light of that I decided to do a kind of commentary on my recent picture of Dresden Files' Bob, which is also interesting to do for me, because I worked a bit differently here than usual. I did more of the work and also effects digitally than I usually do, resulting in some things that worked and others that didn't.

long navel-gazing, also very image heavy )

Notes: I based it on a description from chapter six of Proven Guilty: "Other books, notebooks, envelopes, paper bags, pencils, and apparently random objects of many kinds crowd each other for space on the shelves--all except for one plain, homemade wooden shelf, which held only candles at either end, four romance novels, a Victoria's Secret catalog, and a bleached human skull." I used an actual Victoria's Secret catalog cover to base my drawing of that catalog on and referenced bits from a couple of other photos via a google image search but only the catalog cover is directly traced as a whole, though the skull is close to this skull image. Oh and the Harlequin romance titles are real too, though I can't actually remember whether I matched the right authors with their titles as I created the book spines.

ratcreature: RatCreature as a sloth (sloth)
I'm kind of stuck with my drawing of Bob, so I'm procrastinating by looking for future posting venues. (Maybe somewhat prematurely... *kicks stupid drawing*)

So then I've wondered whether there was a Dresden Files newsletter around, preferably one including the book-side of the fandom, because I haven't watched the series (yet). I did an LJ interest search, but none of the communities seemed to be a newsletter or a noticeboard. And then being essentially a very lazy person I thought about just asking my f-list to point me into the right direction instead of further searching on my own, but just as I was typing this, it occurred to me that I should at least check the [livejournal.com profile] newbieguide for an entry on the Dresden Files as to not appear as a complete moron when asking my f-list. And in fact there is an overview of the Dresden Files fandom on LJ. Heh. It pointed me to the newsletter [livejournal.com profile] dresden_daily, which however for some reason doesn't list "Dresden Files" in its interests (or any interests really), explaining why it didn't pop up in my search. Also, it seems more weekly rather than daily, but that could be just because of fandom volume? I have actually no idea how large Dresden Files fandom is. I don't even know what the commonly accepted acronym is. DF?

Now I'm still wondering though, if there is an art community that isn't just for the tv series. I looked at [livejournal.com profile] dresden_art, but seems to be only for photomanips, icons, wallpapers and such, not traditional drawn fanart and illustrations for the books. At least I haven't seen any posted when browsing. Are there places where Dresden Files book fanart is posted?

Also, do any of you have (bookverse) fanfic recs, that would make my venturing into Dresden Files fandom easier? (I'm feeling the usual new fandom trepidation of venturing blindly into new communities where you don't recognize the any of the names and are generally clueless about that fandom. *g*)
ratcreature: Cute! (cute)
I took a bunch of photos, and on some the little ones were even visible as more than a gray blur or a giant nose pressed against the lens (they find the camera very interesting) and you can see their different kinds of gray a bit better too.
tiny, fuzzy cuteness rules )

Unrelated to rats, can anyone point me to a picture of what exactly a Victoria's Secret catalog looks like? Or describe it to me? I'm trying to do some Dresden Files fanart, a picture of Bob's skull on his shelf, and I have no idea what this underwear catalog looks like, i.e. its format, how thick it is, the logo used etc. When I try google image search the results are predictably of underwear models and such, not photos showing me the catalog. :/
ratcreature: RatCreature is thinking: hmm...? (hmm...?)
I've been reading the series, but I think I missed something in Dead Beat... spoilery question )
