ratcreature: RatCreature smokes Crack (crack)
I'm slowly working through my backlog and updated my AU recs page with the following recs:

Harry Potter

Dudley Dursley and the Hogwarts Letter, by [livejournal.com profile] kindkit. Gen, Dudley Dursley, Lily Potter, Harry Potter, James Potter. (ca. 1,940 words.)
This story gives a brief but interesting look at who Dudley might have become had the Dursleys died in a car crash and the Potters survived.

No Way Back, by [livejournal.com profile] meri_oddities. Slash, Snape/Harry. (ca. 77,780 words)
It has the same premise as Midnight Blue's Mirror of Maybe, i.e. that Harry gets sent through a magical mirror, gaining experience during an alternate life before coming back, but deals with it differently.

Stargate: Atlantis

Cycle and Circuit, by Alloy. Slash, Rodney McKay/John Sheppard. (ca. 8,500 words)
It's rare for me to read crossovers or fusions without knowing both sources, but this fusion putting John and Rodney into the universe of Avatar: The Last Airbender, pulled me in quickly and made the Avatar universe become alive and seem very vivid and fascinating even though I've never watched Avatar: The Last Airbender. I really liked the atmosphere, and the descriptions, and how John and Rodney were fit into this fantasy universe and its mythology.

Come Back Later, by [livejournal.com profile] cottontail. Slash, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay. (ca. 8,800 words)
It's an alternative ending for Tao of Rodney.

The Wrong Side of the Tracks, by [livejournal.com profile] gaiaanarchy. Slash, Rodney McKay/John Sheppard. (ca. 15,200 words)
This story adapts the Disney movie plot "Lady and the Tramp" into a post-apocalyptic SGA futurefic, and I really don't want to spoil the fabulous twists and character mappings that make the two fit together. It shouldn't work so well, but surprisingly it does.

Six crooked highways, by [livejournal.com profile] harriet_spy. Het, John Sheppard/Teyla Emmagan. (ca. 2,000 words)
In this AU after Conversion John retained some Wraith-like characteristicsand left Atlantis.

Before & After, by [livejournal.com profile] helena_eternal. Slash, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Radek Zelenka. (ca. 3,610 words)
It's a Conversion AU told from Radek's POV in which John's change didn't reverse fully.

King of Wishful Thinking, by [livejournal.com profile] margarks. Slash, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay. (ca. 19,890 words)
It's a fusion with the movie Pretty Woman, with John Sheppard as the hooker. I have a soft spot for that trope/movie, so this was a fun and happy making story for me.

The New Mutants, by [livejournal.com profile] mz_bstone. Gen (so far), Rodney McKay, John Sheppard, Elizabeth Weir, Daniel Jackson, Jack O'Neill. WIP
It's a fusion with the X-Men. The government experiments on humans with the ATA gene and they develop superpowers. SG-1 and SGA characters run a kind of resistance that rescues people. It's not that far along yet, but the worldbuilding has me hooked already.

Converging, by [livejournal.com profile] purna. Slash, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay. (ca. 27,000 words)
It's starts out with John as a lifeguard rescuing Rodney, but this isn't an AU just transplanting the characters into different professions, but branchess off from SGA canon pre-series as becomes clear during the story.

Truth, Justice and Rodney McKay (ca. 6,800 words), and its sequels Instinct (ca. 650 words) and Inheritances (ca. 1,500 words), by [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve. Slash, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay.
It's a fusion with Superman. John is an Alteran not a Kryptonian, but has Superman's powers, and Rodney is cast as Lois Lane.

The Last Hail Mary You'll Ever Need, by [livejournal.com profile] sly_bone. Slash, Rodney McKay/John Sheppard, Ronon Dex. (ca. 9,000 words)
This is a fun AU in which John Sheppard and Ronon Dex are space pirates and kidnap Rodney McKay. I really liked that here was some backstory given how Sheppard could have ended up as a space pirate while branching off from the SG universe rather than just transplanting him. I missed Teyla in this AU, though.

Supernatural

And Everything Nice, by Lyra Wing. Gen, Sam, Dean, OC. (ca. 6,550 words)
I didn't really expect to enjoy an AU in which Sam and Dean have a sister who grows up with them, but gave it a try because I usually trust this author to be entertaining, and this AU really pulled me in, was a great read and I liked the original character.

Gimme Shelter (ca. 7,940 words) and its sequel Paint It Black (ca. 1,330 words), by [livejournal.com profile] nilchance. Gen, Sam, Dean, John, Bobby, Missouri. The individual stories are finished, but the universe is still a WIP.
This is a rather bleak AU scenario that explores what might have happened had Mike Gunther called Child Protective Services.

Clay And Paste And Down, by [livejournal.com profile] trollprincess. Het, Sam/Jess, John/Mary. (ca. 3,500 words)
It's wingfic, but handles it in a somewhat unusual way, i.e. in this AU Dean was born with wings.
ratcreature: RatCreature smokes Crack (crack)
I updated my AU recs page with the following recs:

Stargate: Atlantis

The Aquarians (ca. 2,000 words) and its sequel Electric Kool-Aid, Add Fresh Paint (ca. 1,500 words), by [livejournal.com profile] aesc. Slash, Rodney McKay/John Sheppard.
A hilarious story in which Rodney and John meet at Woodstock.

Wrapped in a Red Ribbon, by [livejournal.com profile] auburnnothenna. Slash, Rodney McKay/John Sheppard. (ca. 23,000 words)
This is a fun and action-packed non-stargate AU with John as a cop and Rodney as a forensic scientist who end up going undercover as a gay couple. The story skillfully weaves in a lot of characters from both SGA and SG-1 into its mystery plot, and though I didn't much like the way Ford turned out here, it worked for story. It's a great mix of humor and darker elements, and that the story fed my slave!John-kink certainly didn't hurt either.

Here In This Lonely Place, by [livejournal.com profile] brighidestone. Slash, Rodney McKay/John Sheppard. (ca. 4,500 words)
A fascinating and creepy dystopia, with interesting plot twists involving both the Wraith and the Asurans as well as the Ori.

Jungle Fever, by [livejournal.com profile] cupidsbow. Slash, Rodney McKay/John Sheppard, Cameron Mitchell. (ca. 8,900 words)
The story is based on a Harlequin romance prompt, and is an entertaining adventure story. I would have loved to find out more of the background and how exactly this universe differs from the canon SG-1. Apparently he SGC is fighting the Goa'uld on earth since Rodney has been kidnapped by some Goa'uld's servants and is then rescued by John Sheppard, and their jungle adventures and encounters with hidden Ancient tech proceeds from there.

Absolute Corruption, by Cypher ([livejournal.com profile] seikaitsukimizu). Slash, Rodney McKay/John Sheppard, Daniel Jackson, Jack O'Neill, Lorne. (ca. 19,200 words)
It's an AU for the SG-1 episode Absolute Power. Daniel managed to keep control of earth, and Rodney works for him, while secretly trying to sabotage. Then Daniel gives him the captured resistance soldier John Sheppard as a "pet". I really enjoyed the plot twists in this stories, the uncertainty about who is on whose side.

Carousel, by [livejournal.com profile] gaiaanarchy. Slash, Rodney McKay/John Sheppard. (ca. 13,000 words)
I'm a sucker for timetravel as well as stories dealing with ascension and this one has both. It's an AU version of the events from the Siege.

A Year in the Life, by [livejournal.com profile] ignipes. Slash, Rodney McKay/John Sheppard. (ca. 3,300 words)
It's an SGA AU set in the Supernatural universe. John and Rodney are hunters, and we gradually find out their backstories and how their lives turned out differently than in SGA.

Unconventional Beauty, by [livejournal.com profile] jane_elliot. Slash, Rodney McKay/John Sheppard, Radek Zelenka/Jeannie McKay and Ronon Dex/Teyla Emmagan in the background. (ca. 30,400 words)
The story is a kind of The Beauty and the Beast remix with Stargate Atlantis elements. What I really liked was that it didn't just take the characters into the fairy tale but also kept the sf elements like the Ancients and the Wraith.

Gods That Slumber, by [livejournal.com profile] layton_colt. Slash, Rodney McKay/John Sheppard. (ca. 2,700 words)
Another variant of the "John-as-descended-Ancient" premise.

Fair, by [livejournal.com profile] minnow1212. Slash, Rodney McKay/John Sheppard. (ca. 18,500 words)
This is a delightful AU that takes the premise of fairy!John seriously and makes it fit with the Stargate universe , even though the story has plenty of humor too.

I Believe in Wishful Thinking, by [livejournal.com profile] pentapus. Gen, John Sheppard, Rodney McKay. (ca. 22,400 words)
I haven't watched the movie that was the prompt for this AU (i.e. "Theodora Goes Wild"), but the story is a great comedy, following Rodney's exploits as he tries to track down the author of an anonymously published math article for the Stargate program in a small town, and runs into the war veteran John Sheppard.

Five Ways Tao of Rodney Could Have Ended, by [livejournal.com profile] ras_elased. Gen, Rodney McKay, John Sheppard. (ca. 2,300 words)
Just like the title says, it's different episode tags for Tao of Rodney.

In Remembrance Bear, by [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve. Gen, John Sheppard, Rodney McKay, Teyla Emmagan. (ca. 1,900 words)
It's a fusion placing John and the others in the Firefly universe.

You're a Good Man, John Sheppard, by [livejournal.com profile] smittywing. Gen, John Sheppard, Rodney McKay, Acastus Kolya. (ca. 3,700 words)
John Sheppard is a fighter pilot during the first World War, Rodney is his mechanic and Kolya the Red Baron. Since it is inspired by a Snoopy Christmas special this AU isn't a gritty war story, but it is a very neat and fun idea. Also, the Sheppard-Snoopy association is a brilliant idea: Not just because of their love for flying, they also are both reading War and Peace in their canons at a slow pace, and even the Rodney-Woodstock connection for their respective best friends has several points in its favor, what with both Woodstock and Rodney being unable to fly in a straight line, both liking ice hockey too... (though I can't see Rodney working as John's secretary).

To Serve A Queen, by [livejournal.com profile] tielan. Het, Ronon Dex/Elizabeth Weir, John Sheppard/Teyla Emmagan. (ca. 50,000 words)
This story is a response to the Harlequin challenge and a fusion with Anne Bishop's Black Jewel's universe. I'm not familiar with the books but still enjoyed it as a fantasy story standing on its own. It's a fantasy world with magic and hierarchical castes based on the strength of magic a person wields which is measured in the colors of jewel that are utilized in the spells. Ronon ended up as a slave after his former land Sateda lost a war and Elizabeth, the Queen of the Atlantean court, buys Ronon during a visit to a neighboring court to free him from slavery. Meanwhile Atlantis has also trouble with the Genii and their court. The story isn't very close to SGA, though the characters are about as recognizable as they could be considering that the universe is so different in its setup than canon, but it's definitely a lot of fun to read.

The Theory of Acquired Characters, by [livejournal.com profile] toomuchplor. Slash, Rodney McKay/John Sheppard, Ronon Dex. (ca. 8,400 words)
In this college AU Rodney is posing as a student to approach John, who's a professor, with the goal to recruit him for the Stargate program and Atlantis without revealing too much too soon. It is apparently loosely based on a movie I'm unfamiliar with and quite funny, especially once Ronon shows up as Rodney's backup.

Irony (ca. 2,600 words) and its companion piece The Numbers (ca. 3,200 words), by [livejournal.com profile] trinityofone. Gen, John Sheppard, Rodney McKay, Samantha Carter.
A look at possible backstories for the John and Rodney from the (canonical) alternate reality introduced in the episode McKay and Mrs. Miller.

Supernatural

Light of Day, Dark of Moon, by [livejournal.com profile] maygra. Gen, Dean, Sam. (ca. 3,135 words)
Sam and Dean are under a curse like in the movie Ladyhawke.

Grounding, by [livejournal.com profile] monkeycrackmary. Gen, Dean. (ca. 960 words)
Short snapshots from an AU scenario in which John left Sam and Dean with Ellen and Bill.
ratcreature: RatCreature as zombie. (zombie)
This week's episode was awesome. The season so far just continues to deliver great stuff.

spoilers for Supernatural 2x04 Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things )
ratcreature: RatCreature as Sam and Dean. (sam and dean)
So the whole Supernatural corner of my f-list is basically a huge pit of squee already *g*, but I can't help but to chime in with my squee as well because...

SPN rec

ratcreature: RatCreature as Sam and Dean. (sam and dean)
I just read a great Supernatural story: Muscle of Love, by [livejournal.com profile] researchgrrrl. It's gen, takes place while Sam and Dean are hunting some disgusting zombie-things, and I loved how it is funny while the monsters are still horrible and gross. Also Sam and Dean are great in this story. There's plenty of friendly snark, many great lines, and the story definitely caters to my slight weapons kink as well.
ratcreature: RatCreature smokes Crack (crack)
I updated my AU recs page with the following recs:

Stargate: Atlantis

All You Can Be, by [livejournal.com profile] beingothrwrldly. Slash, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay. (ca. 4,350 words)
Rodney is a music teacher, John was a pilot and gets recalled for war.

The Convenient Husband (part 2 is here), by [livejournal.com profile] brighidestone. Slash, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay. (ca. 12,400 words)
It's another response to the Harlequin challenge. John has to marry to inherit his share of his family's aerospace company, and his childhood friend Rodney seems the most convenient choice.

Atlantis Wasn't Built in a Day, by [livejournal.com profile] eleveninches. Slash, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay. (ca. 3,600 words)
What if they hadn't found a way to save Atlantis from the hurricane during The Storm? This scenario could have been played very angsty, but this story goes for a more lighthearted look at the expedition having to cope with wilderness survival.

Dead Like Them, by [livejournal.com profile] forcryinoutloud and Layton Colt ([livejournal.com profile] nixa_jane). Slash, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay. WIP
It's a fusion with the series Dead Like Me. John, Rodney, Ronon, Jack and Daniel are grim reapers.

Separation Anxiety, by [livejournal.com profile] fydyan. Gen, John Sheppard. (ca. 1,000 words)
This short vignette explores why John might have decided not to join the expedition.

Strangerverse, by Jenn ([livejournal.com profile] seperis). Slash, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay. The individual stories are finished, but the universe is still a WIP.
It's a quantum mirror story in which a Rodney from an alternate reality ends up in the canon universe, albeit at a point in the future after canon!Rodney has died. It is really interesting to see the familiar universe through the eyes of the other Rodney, and to slowly piece together all the ways how that universe, in which John was a mathematician and working as a scientist for the SGC, is different from the familiar one.

String Theory, A Concerto for Violin in D Minor, by [livejournal.com profile] toft_froggy. Slash, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay. (ca. 11,700 words)
Rodney is a composer/conductor, John plays the violin, other characters have minor appearances as musicians too. I'm completely clueless about music, but still this one drew me in and even made their music and performance meaningful for me.

X, by [livejournal.com profile] trinityofone. Gen. (ca. 3,700 words)
It's a fusion with the X-Men (movie) universe. The members of the Atlantis team are all mutants.

Supernatural

No, Make Something Up, by [livejournal.com profile] trollprincess. Het, Sam/Jess. (ca. 3,750 words)
What if Sam had come clear with Jessica about his family while he was at Stanford?

Also, [livejournal.com profile] ficbyzee posted Take The Black Off A Crow, a sequel to the AU story The Compass That You Gave Me, which I had previously recced. In this universe Kon has been taken in by Dick after he escaped Cadmus Labs.
ratcreature: RatCreature smokes Crack (crack)
Some good crossovers I've read recently...

1967 Plymouth GTX Convertible, Black., by [livejournal.com profile] basingstoke. Slash, Dean/Gunn, Angel, Sam. (ca. 2,100 words)
Angel/Supernatural
This one is just a lot of fun. They first meet over anti-zombie supplies, there's banter, Sam and Angel are playing euchre... also Dean/Gunn!

Charm City by [livejournal.com profile] hth_the_first. Slash, Sam/Tim. (ca. 7,630 words)
Homicide: Life on the Streets/Supernatural
I've only watched Homicide sporadically, but the relationships here between Sam and Dean as well as Tim and Sam really pulled me in.

Today's Tom Sawyer (1/2) and (2/2), by [livejournal.com profile] ladyjanelly. Gen, Sam and Ben. (ca. 5,000 words)
Dark Angel/Supernatural
In 2009 Sam runs across Ben, just after the X5 children escaped from Manticore.

The People You Meet, by [livejournal.com profile] mandysbitch. Slash, Chris Keller/Rodney McKay. (ca. 8,300 words)
Oz/Stargate Atlantis
I rarely read crossovers when I just know one of the sources, but I followed a rec somewhere, and the story pulled me in. I have never actually watched any episode of Oz (so I can't judge Keller's characterization), but I think it is pre-series for Oz as well as for SGA. Anyway, it starts when Rodney gets robbed by Keller, and things get more complicated from there at a fast pace.

Case X-1743: Unresolved. by [livejournal.com profile] minisinoo. Het, Mulder/Scully, Jean/Scott. (ca. 24,500 words)
The X-Files/X-Men Movieverse
While still working on the X-Files Mulder and Scully investigate the incident at Scott's high school when his powers first manifested. Years later Mulder notices Scott during Jean's tv appearance and they meet again. The plot is mostly just about getting the characters together, but I really liked how the universes meshed here.

Untitled SGA/Traders series, by Sealie ([livejournal.com profile] jimandblair). Gen, John, Rodney, Carson, Grant.
Stargate Atlantis/Traders
This one is still a WIP, but so far I'm really enjoying it. It's a good take on the "Rodney and Grant are related" premise.

The Monster in the Closet, by Shaye ([livejournal.com profile] fourteenlines). Het, Rodney/Kaylee. (ca. 3,200 words)
Firefly/Stargate Atlantis
Rodney and Kaylee meet as prisoners of the Reavers, so it is rather dark.

Don't Mention the Wookies by [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon. Slash, McKay/Sheppard. (ca 1,400 words)
Stargate Atlantis/Star Wars
I waffled a bit whether this really counts as a real crossover, but I found its slightly wacky premise cute and funny, and it is definitely crossover-ish, so I included it in this rec set anyway.
ratcreature: RatCreature smokes Crack (crack)
Apparently I'm in a spammy mood today, sorry about that, I don't usually inflict three posts in such a short time.

But while going through my bookmarks for the next AU recs update, I thought that maybe non-AU recs also might be of interest. And since crossovers delight me almost as much as AUs I decided to point out a couple of crossovers I've read and liked over the last few months.

Five Superheroes Dean Winchester Never Slept With, by [livejournal.com profile] derryderrydown. Slash and het, Dean Winchester/Roy Harper, Dean Winchester/Stephanie Brown, Dean Winchester/Grace Choi, Dean Winchester/Dick Grayson, Dean Winchester/Jason Todd. (ca. 3,250 words)
DCU/Supernatural
The title really says it all. Dean just fits so very well into the DCU. The idea behind the Dean/Steph snippet is especially cool, but Dick and Dean bonding over their scars and Dean working with Roy were also great.

Stopping for Pancakes and its sequel Looking for Salt, by [livejournal.com profile] dotfic. Gen, Sam Winchester, Dean Winchester, Dana Scully, Fox Mulder. (ca. 950 and 5,800 words)
Supernatural/The X-Files
If you're interested at all in Supernatural you probably have already read those two. Anyway, it's great to have Mulder and Scully interact with the Winchesters. The first takes place pre-series when Sam and Dean are still kids and Mulder and Scully are still working for the FBI, and in the second they run across each other again years later, some time during the first SPN season, and are fighting zombies together. I mean, zombies, how could you resist that? *g*

Once Upon a Time in the West, by [livejournal.com profile] marinarusalka. Het, John Winchester/Sarah Connor. (ca. 7,660 words)
Supernatural/Terminator
John and Sarah meet while buying weapons and ammunition. This makes for an awesome and very fitting pairing (not to mention hot), also Sam and Dean have some hilarious lines. As usual with [livejournal.com profile] marinarusalka's SPN fic the view we get of the Winchesters' pre-series family life is great, even if this is John-centric and not focused on the brothers.

Stray Cat Blues, by [livejournal.com profile] monkeycrackmary. Gen, Faith, Sam, Dean, and John Winchester. (ca. 3,500 words)
Supernatural/Buffy the Vampire Slayer
This takes place pre-series for Supernatural. The Winchesters run into Faith while on the road.

Rollin', by [livejournal.com profile] tzi and [livejournal.com profile] zaganthi. Slash, Rodney McKay/Dean Winchester. (8,256 words)
Supernatural/Stargate Atlantis
This isn't a pairing or crossover that would have occurred to me, but strangely it works.

White Rabbit, by [livejournal.com profile] valderys. Gen, John Sheppard, Grant Jansky (the author labelled it as being "pre-slash if you squint" for a bunch of pairings, but I read it as gen). (8,866 words)
Traders/Stargate Atlantis
This was done for the [livejournal.com profile] reel_sga challenge and adapts the movie Harvey. After an Ancient technology mishap John finds himself back on earth and in the past, and only Grant Jansky can see him. Donald's, Jack's and Adam's reactions to Grant seeing an invisible Air Force Colonel are great, it is a lot of fun to read.
ratcreature: headdesk (headdesk)
I was browsing the official Supernatural site which is one of those annoying all Flash things you can't properly navigate, but have to click at random. However, at one point you can get to this Flash version of John Winchester's diary, which looked interesting enough as far as supplementary website stuff goes, so I started reading that, and once again marvel at the stupidity of TPTB. Because there's this diary entry from December 13, 1983 in which John talks about how the police investigation of Mary's death brought no result, and he writes "All the forensics are back, and they didn't find a thing. No fingerprints, no DNA, no blood, nothing at all left of my wife's body, no sign of anyone else in that house." And I'm just WTF?!?

I'm fairly sure DNA analysis for crime scenes wasn't done as a standard investigation thing in 1983. I mean, I still remember it being all new and controversial much later. Actually according to this wikipedia entry it wasn't even invented until 1984 and first used only in 1986, and looking for DNA traces at the scene of an unusual house fire is not something I think would be done even with a technique that was just new instead of not invented yet.

Thankfully I have no problem to ignore stuff they merely put on websites, but still... *headdesk* It's not that I mind slightly wonky forensics, science or police procedures or facts, I'm not nitpicky, but to be this anachronistic is totally stupid.
ratcreature: RatCreature is thinking: hmm...? (hmm...?)
I'm not feeling particularly fannish about Supernatural, but I have watched most episodes, thus while I was bored I looked around for Supernatural fanfic to read. I was mostly interested in gen, and while of course I knew that there's Sam/Dean slash I was actually surprised how common it is, from my first impressions even more widespread than gen (though I could be wrong about that). And I just don't get it. Personally I just have a hard time seeing Sam/Dean slash.

It's not that I'm particularly squicked by sibling incest, but the story has to somehow work harder to make that kind of thing work than other pairings. Not only because it has to make me buy that they would act on a sexual attraction despite incest taboos, that is similar in a way to other "relationship obstacles" in romance stories, but because it has to make me buy that there would be attraction in the first place. With most pairings I can buy that the author simply has a character feel attraction, inappropriate or not, and then the story goes from there, but for me (and I suspect most people) thinking about close family members with whom you grew up with, like your own siblings or parents and sex together is, well, sort of icky. Not just incestuous sex, but even the fact that your sibling or parent has sex with anyone, that's the kind of thing you don't want to contemplate in much detail. At least I don't, and I suspect I'm not alone in that.

I tried reading a couple of Sam/Dean stories, but they seemed to be much like regular slash in the way that it assumes that the reader buys the possibility for attraction between the guys in the first place. I don't quite get what makes this plausible for Sam/Dean shippers just from watching the series, and yet it seems very common. Which leaves me puzzled. I looked whether there was an essay on this pairing at [livejournal.com profile] ship_manifesto to provide me with some insight, but there doesn't seem to be one yet. So does anyone know of any Supernatural meta that would explain to me where the Sam/Dean shippers are coming from?
